With an avowed aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and creating awareness on cancer among the masses, MGM Cancer Institute along with TI India on Sunday organized Ride for a Cause – The Cyclathon in Singara Chennai.
The cyclathon was flagged off by E Kangaraj, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ambattur Range, Avadi Police Commissionerate. Joseph Premraj, Associate Vice President, Administration & CSR Head at Murugappa Group and Dr MA Raja, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Director of Oncology Services, MGM Healthcare were also present at the flag off ceremony.

It commenced from TI Cycles of India Ambattur OT and concluded at MGM Cancer Institute, Nelson Manickam Road, Aminjikarai.
A total of over 200 participants took part in the cyclathon event an initiative to raise awareness on Cancer disease. The 14-km stretch had cyclists showcased their sporting skills and were seen carrying few key messages on the disease.
Physical fitness plays a major role in leading a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of associating with TI India is also to highlight the importance of physical fitness by encouraging regular exercise amongst everyone. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) predicts a possible 12% rise in cancer rate in India by the next five years. As per their report on the ‘Burden of cancers in India’, seven cancers account for 40% of the total disease burden: lung, breast, esophagus, mouth, stomach, liver and cervix uteri cancer. Measures to reduce the risk of cancer include better education of the public, starting from school children, awareness campaigns on potential harm of tobacco and alcohol.
On speaking at the cyclathon, Dr. M.A. Raja, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Director of Oncology Services, MGM Healthcare said, “MGM Healthcare is all set to launch its exclusive Institute for Cancer at the earliest in the city. Through this initiative we want to eradicate the fear prevalent among the people about Cancer. We want the patients to go through the journey of cancer in a smooth relaxed way.”
The Cyclathon was backed by expert Medical Advisory Team that had doctors and representatives from MGM Healthcare present to advise and guide the cyclists.
