Over nine lakh stranded migrant workers had been sent back to their home states from Gujarat in special Shramik trains, an official said on Thursday.

At least 633 Shramik trains carrying migrants, who were stranded due to the COVID-19 lockdown, had left for other states from Gujarat, said Ashwani Kumar, secretary to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Of 2,023 Shramik special trains run by the Railways so far, 633 had originated from Gujarat until Wednesday midnight and had ferried 9.18 lakh migrant workers to their home states, he said.
The highest number of Shramik trains had originated from Gujarat, followed by Maharashtra (371) and Punjab (247), he added.
Stranded workers were ferried to states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu among others, the official said.
As many as 64 trains will depart from Gujarat with 1.01 lakh migrants on Thursday, he added.
Over 1,500 Tamils leave by the first Shramik Special for Tamil Nadu
Ahmedabad Tamil Sangam (ATS) has coordinated with the state governments of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat in arranging a special Shramik train for the stranded migrant labourers, tourists and students in Gujarat to travel back to their home state of Tamil Nadu and the UT Pudhucherry.
The Sangam members led by its president Dr Sundara Kavidass, an internationally acclaimed energy expert and Dr R Valarivan, joint secretary have toiled hard for over ten days right from registration of the passengers to the train departure on Wednesday night at 11 hours.
The train had left Ahmedabad and picked up Tamils from Vadodara and Surat on its way to Thirunelveli. The train will halt at Chennai, Tiruchi and Madurai before reaching its destination on Friday.

On Day-1, State transport buses carry 23,069 passengers
After Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced the resumption of the State transport bus service from Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm in areas other than containment zones across the state, over 23,000 people travrelled across the state, a senior official said.
On the first day – May 20- 23,069 passengers from all over the state travelled to various spots wearing masks and maintaining social distance, said Secretary to the Chief Minister, Ashwani Kumar.
He added that the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has resumed the bus services after two months. On the first day, as many as 23,069 passengers travelled through a total of 6,600 busses which include 46 express and 6,545 local trips.
“Gujarat state transport even carried out various services amid lockdown. It had never stopped and had helped to facilitate migrant workers to move from one destination to another or for special relief operations. For which the entire transport corporations team shall be appreciated.
“In the prevailing circumstances, passengers should travel via e-ticket or mobile ticket. However, to avoid inconvenience to the common passengers, tickets are also issued with cash from the counter at the bus stand as well as by conductor in the bus in a manner that complies with social distancing,” Kumar added.
He further said that the passengers must arrive at the bus stand at least 30 minutes before the bus departs. The buses are operated with 60 per cent of the capacity of the passengers. After each trip bus is being sanitized and operated for another trip. At present, ST service is being operated in all the districts except Ahmedabad. The interstate transport and Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad has also been kept shut.
Secretary to the CM said that in ST bus service has been operational in five zones of the state, which include Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Gandhinagar in North Zone, Kheda, Panchmahal, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Dahod, Anand, Chhotaudepur in central zone, Surat, Valsad, Tapi, Dang, Bharuch, Navsari, Narmada in south Zone, Rajkot, Morbi, Junagadh, Porbandar, Botad, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Jamnagar, Surendranagar, Gir Somnath, Devbhoomi Dwarka in saurashtra zone and major cities of Bhuj to North Zone as well Saurashtra Zone.
