MUMBAI, JUNE 15
In a landmark achievement for India’s innovation ecosystem, Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries Limited, has surged into the Global Top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings, becoming the only Indian technology innovator to secure a place among the world’s leading patent creators.
The latest WIPO rankings showcase an extraordinary 320-place jump by Jio Platforms during 2025, making it one of the fastest-rising technology innovators globally and placing it alongside international giants such as Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft.
The remarkable ascent is particularly significant as it comes during a year when global PCT filings increased by less than one per cent, underlining the exceptional pace and scale of Jio’s research and innovation capabilities.
Jio’s rapidly expanding intellectual property portfolio is centred on next-generation technologies including 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence, AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.
Commenting on the milestone, Shri Akash M. Ambani, Managing Director, Jio Platforms Limited, said: “The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the WIPO PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company. It demonstrates the velocity of innovation at Jio across multiple advanced technologies, which will continue to grow in coming years. I would like to dedicate this achievement to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which envisages India to become a creator, owner and exporter of technology to the world. We are proud to contribute to India’s journey towards becoming a global deep-tech powerhouse.”
The WIPO recognition serves as an important global validation of Jio Platforms’ research and development strength and the growing depth of its intellectual property portfolio, firmly establishing India-origin innovation on the global technology creation map.
As of March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms has filed a cumulative 6,817 patents, including 2,393 filings in India and 4,424 across international jurisdictions.
The company has already secured 1,009 patent grants worldwide, comprising 538 patents in India and 471 patents in overseas markets, reflecting the commercial relevance and technological maturity of its innovations.
Unlike conventional research-driven filings, Jio’s intellectual property strategy is deeply rooted in technologies that have already been developed, deployed and commercialised at scale, strengthening the practical impact of its innovations.
Looking ahead, the company is investing aggressively in emerging “sunrise technologies” expected to define the future of digital infrastructure, including 5G and 6G Radio, 5G and 6G Core technologies, satellite communications and Agentic Artificial Intelligence through JioBrain.
These futuristic initiatives are expected to further accelerate the growth of Jio’s intellectual property portfolio while supporting next-generation commercial applications across industries.
Jio Platforms’ ascent into the WIPO Global Top 20 marks more than a corporate milestone—it reflects a broader transformation of India’s technology landscape, signalling the country’s evolution from a large-scale adopter of digital technologies to an influential global creator of original deep-tech innovation.
