Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel have condoled the demise of Gujarat’s first woman chief secretary Dr Manjula Subramaniam.
The Prime Minister tweeted: “Anguished by the demise of veteran bureaucrat Dr. Manjula Subramaniam Ji. She was widely respected for her understanding of policy related issues and action oriented approach. I recall my interactions with her when I was CM. Condolences to her family and friends. Om Shanti.”

Dr Manjula Subramaniam, passed away due to health complications at a hospital in Vadodara on Sunday. She was 74.
A 1972 batch Gujarat-cadre officer, Subramaniam was appointed the first woman chief secretary in 2007 when Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat. Later, she held the post of Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) and also served on the board of various energy PSUs.
She had resigned from the board of Gujarat Gas in January 2022.
Various Gujarat-based Tamil associations have also expressed grief over the death of Subramaniam, a Tamil.
Commenting on her death, Additional Chief Secretary of General Administration Department AK Rakesh said, “She had been facing health issues for some time. She was in hospital for around a week… And today she passed away.”
Terming her an “upright officer”, Rakesh said, “Her contributions, especially to the urban and power sectors of Gujarat, is remarkable.”
Subramaniam held the office of chief secretary between September 1, 2007, and September 30, 2008.
