NEW DELHI, OCT 13
In a significant stride towards transforming India’s agricultural landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched two major schemes with a combined outlay of ₹35,440 crore. These initiatives aim to bolster farmer incomes, promote sustainable practices, and enhance nutritional security across the nation.
PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
The PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, with an investment of ₹24,000 crore, targets 100 underperforming agricultural districts. The scheme focuses on enhancing irrigation facilities, promoting crop diversification, improving post-harvest storage, and facilitating access to credit. By integrating 36 programs across 11 departments, the initiative seeks to uplift areas with historically low productivity
Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses
The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, allocating ₹11,440 crore, aims to achieve self-reliance in pulse production. With a target to increase pulse acreage by 35 lakh hectares and boost output from 252.38 lakh tonnes to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31, the mission addresses the nation’s dependency on pulse imports
Promotion of Millets and Sustainable Practices
Highlighting the resilience of millets, especially in water-scarce regions, Prime Minister Modi emphasized, “Where water is scarce, millets are a lifeline. The global market for millets is growing rapidly.” Millets, known for their low water requirements and climate resilience, are being promoted as a sustainable alternative to traditional crop.
Encouraging Group Farming and Diversification
The Prime Minister also advocated for group farming, where small and marginal farmers pool resources to cultivate high-value crops. This approach aims to enhance production, reduce costs, and improve market access. Additionally, he encouraged diversification into allied sectors like animal husbandry, fisheries, and beekeeping to provide supplementary income sources for farmers.
Commitment to Farmer Welfare
Expressing gratitude towards the farming community, Prime Minister Modi stated, “This is the first time in my life that I have had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister. He is a truly good leader who connects with farmers and ordinary citizens alike.” The government’s focus on sustainable agriculture practices and rural prosperity reflects a long-term commitment to the welfare of farmers and the nation’s food security.
