Pondicherry University holds 2-day poster exhibition on new criminal laws

Under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs and guidance from Pondicherry University, the School of Law, in collaboration with Ananda Rangapillai Library, Pondicherry University, organized a 2-day, May 6-7, Poster Exhibition dedicated to shedding light on the New Criminal Laws in India.

The new laws are Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

The event aimed to familiarize attendees with the impending legal reforms set to take effect on July 1, 2024. The event commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp to mark its official inauguration.

Among the distinguished guests present was Dr. Ajit Kumar Singla, IPS, Inspector General of Police, who inaugurated the exhibition alongside with Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Vice Chancellor (i/c), Pondicherry University); Prof. Victor Anandkumar, Dean (i/c), School of Law; and Dr. M. Vijayakumar, University Librarian; in the presence of Prof. Clement S Lourdes, Director, (C & CR); and Dr. Gurminder Kaur, Asst. Prof. & Head (i/c), School of Law.

The event commenced with an introductionby Dr. Shyamtanu Pal, Asst. Prof., School of Law, providing context and importance of this exhibition on the new criminal laws and how these reforms represent a holistic approach to addressing modern challenges, enhancing accountability, and ensuring a safer environment for all citizens. Dr. Singla (IPS), in his inaugural address, highlighted the significance of these legal reforms in addressing contemporary societal challenges. Prof. Victor Anandkumar delivered the welcome address wherein he extended a heartfelt welcome to all dignitaries and attendees, expressing gratitude for their presence at the event. He emphasized the significance of the occasion, highlighting how this exhibition serves as a platform for fostering understanding and dialogue on crucial legal reforms. The presidential address was delivered by Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu. He highlighted the paramount importance of the new criminal laws, emphasizing their pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency and fairness of the criminal justice administration. He also delivered as to how these laws will serve as a cornerstone in upholding the principles of justice and ensuring the protection of individual rights within the legal framework. Dr. Vijayakumar, University Librarian, concluded the formalities with a vote of thanks. The event witnessed participation of Deans, HODs, faculty members, staff and students across the University.

Dr. Singla’s insights into each poster, particularly regarding changes in sections and punishments, facilitated a deeper understanding among students and guests alike. It was a valuable learning experience that provided to participants, empowering them with knowledge crucial for navigating the legal landscape. Furthermore, Dr. Singla proposed the initiation of a public awareness campaign on the new criminal laws in various areas of Pondicherry, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in legal reform efforts. In conclusion, the exhibition served as a testament to the commitment of Pondicherry University’s School of Law to promote legal literacy and societal well-being through informative and engaging initiatives. The compering for the event was done by Dr. G. Subhalakshmi (Asst. Prof.), School of Law. The coordinators from School of Law were, Dr. Shyamtanu Pal (Asst. Prof.), Dr. Tenzin JangchupKhampa (Asst. Prof.) and Dr. P. Vijayakumar(Asst. Librarian) and Dr. K.M. Shibu (Asst. Librarian) from University Library.
