R ARIVANANTHAM
CHENNAI, OCT 31

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi has on Thursday urged India’s wind energy industry — including OEMs and component manufacturers — to raise local content in wind projects to 85% from the current 64%, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat in clean energy manufacturing. Speaking at Windergy India 2025, the country’s premier wind energy exhibition and conference being held in Chennai, he underscored that domestic value addition is crucial for ensuring supply chain resilience amid rising global uncertainties.

“Wind energy contributes nearly one-fifth of India’s 257 GW installed renewable capacity. Wind is playing a crucial role in driving Aatmanirbharta and indigenization, given its high local content. India can capture 10% of the global wind supply chain by 2030, and up to 20% by 2040,” Joshi said, while also announcing that the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for ALMM (Wind) will be introduced soon.

He added, “India is among the top five countries manufacturing most wind components domestically. We have reached nearly 54 GW of installed capacity, and with progressive policies like ALMM (Wind), the next 46 GW will be largely domestically built. This financial year alone, installations will exceed 6 GW, setting a strong momentum for the decade ahead.”

Sun shines in Tamil Nadu: Joshi

Commending Tamil Nadu, the minister said from the first wind farms to today’s cutting-edge turbines, Tamil Nadu has led India’s clean energy journey and continues to inspire other states. He said Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh together contributes almost half of India’s total wind energy capacity which stands at 54 GW.

To unlock new areas, the Minister said the centre has launched a viability Gap Funding scheme for off shore wind projects and under this scheme, 500 MW project will be established off the coast of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. The initial result of the survey on this project, with the help of floating buoys has been completed and the results show the potential of generating wind energy in that area to very high.  The Minister said tender for this project will be out by Feb 2026.

The event — jointly organised by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and PDA Ventures Pvt. Ltd. — witnessed participation from 350 exhibitors across 20 countries and over 15,000 visitors. Notable attendees included S.S. Sivasankar, Minister of Transport and Electricity, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Johann Saathoff, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany.

Girish Tanti, Chairman, IWTMA, extended the industry’s support to the government’s mission:

“We welcome MNRE’s vision to strengthen Atmanirbharta in wind energy. With 64% local content and over 2,500 MSMEs contributing, India already has one of the most resilient and competitive wind manufacturing ecosystems. Our domestic capabilities span nacelles, blades, and towers — commanding over 10% of the global market. With continued focus on technology, scale, and innovation, India can achieve 85% localization and serve 10% of the world’s wind supply chain by 2030.”

Windergy India 2025 marks a decisive step toward reinforcing India’s global leadership in renewable manufacturing — a testament to the nation’s growing prowess in clean energy innovation and industrial self-reliance.
