In a significant clinical milestone for integrative healthcare in India, Apollo AyurVAID, the country’s leading NABH-accredited precision Ayurveda hospital network, has successfully helped a 36-year-old male patient diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip avoid a medically advised hip replacement surgery, restoring full mobility and quality of life through a structured, non-surgical Ayurveda protocol.
- Early Intervention, Evidence-Based Care, Life Restored
- Avascular Necrosis Reversed Without Surgery Through Clinically-Governed Ayurveda
- 10-Month Precision Protocol Brings Pain-Free Mobility Back
- ·A Case That Redefines Non-Surgical Musculoskeletal Care in India
The patient, whose profession required prolonged standing and night shifts, had been battling severe pain and functional limitations. He was unable to sit or stand for more than five to ten minutes and struggled to walk independently. Given the progressive nature of AVN, surgical intervention had been recommended as the next inevitable step.
When Surgery Seemed Inevitable, Precision Ayurveda Offered Hope
Seeking a non-surgical alternative, the patient approached Apollo AyurVAID’s Vanagaram facility in April 2024. Following a comprehensive clinical evaluation, the medical team designed a precision-led Ayurveda treatment plan aimed at interrupting the underlying disease progression rather than merely managing symptoms.
The protocol was formulated after assessing disease stage, individual constitution, lifestyle risk factors, and prognosis, ensuring alignment with clinical governance standards and patient safety benchmarks.
Inside the Protocol: Targeting Bone Health and Systemic Balance
The treatment included:
- Asthiposhaka Rasayana to nourish and regenerate bone tissue
- Abhyanga with medicated herbal oils to improve circulation and reduce stiffness
- Basti therapy, a cornerstone of Panchakarma, to address deep-rooted musculoskeletal pathology and systemic imbalance
Over a 10-month treatment period, the patient demonstrated steady and measurable improvement in pain reduction, joint mobility, endurance, and functional independence.
Today, he is completely pain-free, able to ride a two-wheeler, stand for extended periods, and actively participate in family life — including lifting and caring for his toddler.
Expert Speak: Surgery Is Not Always the First or Only Answer
Commenting on the case, Dr. Smitha Jayadev, Senior Physician and Medical Superintendent, Apollo AyurVAID, said: “Avascular necrosis is often perceived as a condition where surgery becomes inevitable. This case demonstrates how a precision-led, clinically governed Ayurveda approach can address disease progression and restore function. Ayurvedic intervention is more fruitful in early stages of the condition; however, in advanced stages, surgical support may be required, with Ayurveda playing a supportive role in recovery.”
She added that Ayurveda also places strong emphasis on preventive bone health, especially for individuals at risk due to aging or lifestyle factors.
“Daily dietary practices play a vital role in sustaining musculoskeletal health. Ingredients such as cow’s milk, cow ghee, honey, and amla can be incorporated as part of a balanced diet, under appropriate guidance, to support long-term tissue nourishment,” she noted.
Dr Ajithkumar Vivekanandan, Associate Chief Physician, Apollo AyurVAID explained detail about the procedure. While answering a query, he said this treatment is covered under the health insurance.
Patient Voice: ‘I Have My Life Back’
Sharing his experience, the patient Vimal R said: “It was the toughest phase of my life. I had become dependent on my family for even the smallest daily needs. Simple tasks like standing, walking, or sitting for a few minutes required support, which was difficult to accept, especially at my age.”
He added: “As a young parent, the thought of undergoing hip replacement surgery and the long recovery it involves was daunting. I wanted to explore whether there was any alternative before committing to surgery. I came to know about Apollo AyurVAID and chose to undergo treatment in good faith. Over time, the improvement was clear and consistent. Today, I am back to my normal life, able to work, move freely, and care for my child without pain.”
AVN in India: A Growing Concern Among the Young
Avascular Necrosis is emerging as a major public health concern in India, accounting for over 50% of total hip replacement surgeries, with a disproportionately high prevalence among young males aged 20–40 years. Prolonged steroid use and excessive alcohol consumption remain key risk factors.
When diagnosed early, AVN can be effectively managed through Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma therapies, which focus on preventing further mineral loss, improving circulation, and supporting natural bone regeneration.
