President Ram Nath Kovind greeted citizens on the eve of Onam on Sunday and said we must take care of people from the weaker sections of the society while celebrating festivals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The festival of Onam is a symbol of our rich cultural heritage, he said. “It is also an expression of our gratitude to mother nature at the arrival of new crop,” Kovind said.
“In the times of the COVID-19 pandemic, while celebrating festivals, we must take care of people from the weaker sections of the society and take adequate measures to protect and safeguard our families and society at large,” the president said.
He said, “May this festival strengthen the sense of cooperation and brotherhood in our country and pave the way for prosperity while living in harmony with mother nature.”
Kovind extended heartiest congratulations to all fellow citizens, especially to people of Kerala, according to a statement by Rashtrapati Bhavan.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister K Palaniswami and leaders of political parties on Sunday greeted Keralites on the occasion of Onam festival that will be celebrated tomorrow.
The Governor said the harvest festival reminded one and all to shed differences and work for progress, take a resolve to dedicate themselves to promote love, compassion and strive towards the nations progress and prosperity. “On the joyous and auspicious occasion of Onam, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to the Malayalee brothers and sisters in Tamil Nadu and across the globe,” Purohit said.

Palaniswami, extending his hearty greetings to Keralites, wished them joy, peace and prosperity. Without any differences like caste or religion, the Malayalee people celebrate ”Thiruonam”, giving importance for brotherhood and an egalitarian society, the Chief Minister said, hailing the festival as one that had great cultural heritage.
DMK president M K Stalin greeted the Malayalee people on the occasion and praised the festival as one that signified equality, brotherhood and harmony.
PMK founder leader S Ramadoss also extended his greetings, saying people should take a resolve to love, protect and nurture nature on the occasion.
Several regions of Tamil Nadu are home to a large number of Malayalam speaking people and ”Onam” is a government, local holiday in districts, including Chennai and Coimbatore.
Puducherry Lt. Governor, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy
PUDUCHERRY: Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, Ministers and MLAs were among those who extended Onam greetings on Sunday to the people of Puducherry and Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala.
In her message, the Lt Governor said that “Onam is most popular and significant festival of Malayali brethren residing throughout the globe, who celebrate the festival to mark the bountiful harvest and ringing memories of the past golden era, reassuring peace and prosperity`” She called upon them to celebrate the festival from the safety of their homes and seek the blessings of the supreme power for return of normalcy (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) at the earliest.
The Chief Minister, in his message, said his government has left no stone unturned to ameliorate the lot of the people of Mahe region of the Union Territory.
He urged the people celebrating the festival by maintaining social distancing and adhering to safety norms.
Ministers, legislators and leaders of different outfits were among those who extended their greetings.
