Inspector General Donny Michael, TM, Regional Commander, Indian Coast Guard Region East has been conferred President Tatrakshak Medal for distinguished service by President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of Independence Day.
IG Donny Micheal heads the Eastern Region of ICG which covers the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The award of President Tatrakshak Medal to the officer signifies exceptional devotion to duty and meritorious service.
IG Donny Michael, TM joined Indian Coast Guard on 06 Jul 90 after completing his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai. He has won numerous awards for academic excellence during initial training and specialization phase at Naval training establishments. Apart from the professional qualification gained as part of initial training, his other qualifications include Masters in Maritime Affairs from World Maritime University, Sweden, Search and Rescue Course from SAA, Singapore. He is a fellow of Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping, Mumbai and has also obtained LLB degree from Delhi University in 2011 to hone his professional competence in the vast maritime arena of law enforcement.
IG Donny Michael has been actively involved in various Coast Guard related litigation matters and has defended the Government of India interests at International courts/arbitration. The officer has held command of all major class of ships in ICG in the past and on promotion to Inspector General, has also held the position of DDG (HRD) and DDG (CG Selection Board) at the ICG Headquarters, New Delhi.
After taking over the helm of Coast Guard Eastern Region East at Chennai in Nov 2023, IG Donny Michael has pursued maritime affairs in the states of AP, TN and Puducherry which include maintaining seamless surveillance through deployment of ships and aircraft, engaging coastal communities and state administration for enhanced coordination towards coastal security etc. He has also given thrust towards infrastructure development and welfare measures for ICG personnel.
The award of President Tatrakshak Medal to IG Donny Michael is a recognition to his outstanding and unblemished service of 34 years in Indian Coast Guard.
