The union territory of Puducherry reported 782 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours taking the overall tally to 51,372, a senior official of the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services said on Friday.
Two more patients, both hailing from Puducherry, succumbed to the virus taking the toll to 728, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said.
As many as 383 patients were discharged from healthcare facilities during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Friday, he added.
He said there were 6,330 active cases including 5,033 in home isolation.
The Health department Director said that 44,314 patients have been discharged after recovery so far.
The Puducherry region alone accounted for 620 of the 792 fresh cases while Karaikal reported92 followed by 47 in Yanam and 33 in Mahe regions.
The 792 cases were detected following the testing of 5,081 samples, he added.
The fatality and recovery rates were 1.42 per cent and 86.26 per cent respectively.
The Health department Director said that 7.53 lakh samples have been examined so far and it was found that 6.80 lakh turned out to be negative.
The two patients who died had no comorbidity and were in the age groups of 53 and 57 years.
The cause of their death was severe covid pneumonia among other reasons, Mohan Kumar said.
He further said 30,946 healthcare workers and 18,222 frontline workers have been vaccinated so far.

The second phase of vaccination which began on March 1 has covered so far 1,12,280 people coming under the category of either senior citizens (above sixty years) or those belonging to the age group of more than 45 years with comorbidities.

Meanwhile, Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan visited the Covid Care centre set up on the premises of the Police Lines in neighbouring Gorimedu Friday.
Later, she told reporters that the government had initiated all steps including the posting of adequate doctors, paramedical personnel to rise to any exigency.

Tamilisai Soundararajan appealed to the people not to lower their guard against Covid.
She also asked people not to have any apprehensions about vaccination.
“Vaccination ensures safety and no apprehension should be entertained by the people,” she added.
The Lt Governor said at a meeting held on Thursday under her chairmanship it had been decided that all hospitals including JIPMER should be equipped with adequate number of oxygen beds.
