Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday dedicated the newly constructed Science Technology Innovation-Hub (STI-Hub), Mechanical Engineering Research Utility (MERU) and refurbished Sigma Conference Hall of NIT Puducherry.

Prizes for the competitions conducted on the Government’s campaign Viksit Bharat were also distributed to participants by the Lieutenant Governor.

The STI-Hub is the part of a project titled “STI Hub for Socio-Economic Empowerment of SC community of Union Territory of Puducherry through Technology Assisted Fish Farming, Fish Processing and Value Addition” funded by DST-SEED Division, Government of India, with an overall sanctioned amount of ₹99.98 Lakhs. The facility with an area of 1033sqft, at a cost of ₹.72.30 Lakhs, is housed with advanced Fish Processing Equipment such as Solar Fish Dryers with various backup options for heating, Cold Storage, Fish Mincer, Batter Breading Machine, Ice Flakers etc.

A two-day training program on Fish Processing and Value Addition at NIT Puducherry was also inaugurated as an initiation for the subsidized training programs. The goal is to provide training in Fish Processing and Value Addition for skill-enhancement and financial uplift of the weaker sections of society, primarily the fishing community.
The Mechanical Engineering Research Utility (MERU) at NIT Puducherry, is a facility created for research and industrial consultancy works. Presently, it comprises various equipment.
- Equipment: A Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB)
- Description: Determines the dynamic mechanical properties of materials at high strain rates.
- Cost:₹.38 lakhs
- Used in Collaboration with:Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
- Equipment: Geared Lathe
- Description:Executes metal shaping tasks.
- Cost:₹.18 lakhs.
- Equipment: Solar Concentrator Training System (Solar Parabolic Trough) and Solar Parabolic Cooker
- Description: Performs experiments on heat transfer, parabolic trough characteristics and heat loss at different parts of the system
- Cost:₹.6 lakhs.
- Equipment to be installed: Dynamic Universal Testing Machine
- Description: Tests the strength of materials in a variety of engineering applications.
- Capacity: Its massive capacity of 25 tons is unique to NIT Puducherry
- Cost:₹3.2 Crores.
- Equipment to be installed:Gear Test Rig
- Description: Used in heavy engineering applications, first of its kind available in an educational institution across South Asia.
- Cost:₹75 lakhs.
- Used in Collaboration with: Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Sigma Conference Hall
The Sigma Conference Hall is a recently refurbished at a cost of ₹.16Las air-conditioned multi-purpose seminar hall with a total capacity of 120 seats. It is equipped with a podium, projector and audio-visual facilities and other features required for conducting academic events.
As a part of the inauguration, MoUs have been signed with the following Institutions and Industry:
- Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, Nagapattinam
- E.G.S. Pillay Engineering College, (EGSPEC) Nagapattinam
- Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering & Technology, Puducherry
- Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Puducherry
- M/s. OGOENERGY India Pvt.Ltd., Noida
Dr Usha Natesan, Director-in-charge, NIT Puducherry and A Kulothungan, District Collector and District Magistrate, Karaikal District along with the Deans, Associate Deans, Head of the Departments, Faculty and staff members of the Institute, CPWD members and Officials of Union Territory of Puducherry were also present in the function.
