Rail users in Thanjavur district have made a fervent plea to Southern Railway to provide direct train services to Palani and Salem from Mayiladuthurai via Kumbakonam and Thanjavur. They also reiterated their demand for restoration of stoppage at Papanasam for select trains.

Train Passengers Association Papanasam secretary T Saravanan and Thanjavur District Rail Users Association secretary A Giri met Southern Railway’s Trichy Divisional Railway Manager Manish Agarwal in Kumbakonam on Friday and presented separate representations containing the demands.

  • MPs and MLAs urge railways to expedite approval for the proposed track doubling between Thanjavur and Villupuram via Kumbakonam.
  • Public representatives also demand to shift the existing goods yard at Kumbakonam to Tirunageswaran in the railway land available there

Papanasam is one of the well-patronised stations under Tiruchi Railway Division generating considerable revenue under spiritual tourism.

Later, Manish Agarwal held a consultation meeting with public representatives  to discuss the Station Redevelopment project at Kumbakonam Station.

Members of Parliament – S  Ramalingam (Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha), M Shanmugam and S Kalyanasundaram (Rajya Sabha)  Tamilnadu Government Chief Whip Kovai Sezhiyan, Kumbakonam MLA K Anbalagan, Deputy Mayor of Kumbakonam Corporation SP Tamilalagan, representatives of Railway users association and Trader bodies participated.

Manish Agarwal highlighted the probable works to be taken up in Station Redevelopment project.

A Technical Consultancy firm has been identified to bring out a detailed project report based on the level of amenities and facilities needed to the passengers for another 50 years. The entire redevelopment work may be completed in 2024 end or earlier 2025 he said.

It was unanimously suggested by the public representatives to shift the existing goods yard at Kumbakonam to Tirunageswaran in the railway land available there.

Southern Railway Chief Project Officer Ashok Kumar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Dr Senthilkumar, and host of Railway officials participated in the meeting.
