The Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday on October 16 due to the predictions of extremely heavy rainfall in the state on Wednesday. The rainfall in Chennai is expected to continue until the morning of October 18, with the most intense showers predicted for October 16.
According to weather experts, the stretch between Mahabalipuram and Nellore could experience the heaviest rainfall, with some areas expected to receive very heavy showers.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has formed a low-pressure area off south coastal Andhra Pradesh and lay over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast, said the state Chief Minister’s Office.

“Under its influence, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu on 16th October. Given the above, the Government has decided to declare a Public Holiday tomorrow.”
All government offices, including the offices of Public Undertakings, Corporations, boards etc will be closed tomorrow in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram.
However, all essential services, such as Police, Fire Service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply, hospitals/medical shops, Banks, Financial Institutions, power supply, transport of vegetables, goods and other essential goods, Transport, MTC, MRTS, CMRL, Railways, Airport, Airlines Services, Port Services, Export and Import institutions, fuel outlets, hotels/ restaurants, etc., and all the offices engaged in disaster response, relief and rescue activities shall function as usual.
“All shops and other commercial establishments shall function as usual,” as per CMO office.

Earlier on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took stock of the rain situation in the state capital amid incessant downpours.
Stalin also visited the canal on Ambedkar Road, which diverts surplus water from Kilkattalai Lake to Narayanapuram Lake and interacted with residents to understand their concerns.

CM MK Stalin inspected and monitored the rain affected area in Chennai. While doing so he could also be seen sharing a cup of hot tea with rescue and relief workers.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also inspected Integrated Control and Command Centre, in Chennai and informed about the situation and said that the highest rainfall around 6 cm was recorded in Sholinganallur and Teynampet area of Chennai.
Speaking about the rain situation, Udhayanidhi Stalin said, ” Around 5 cm average rainfall has been recorded in Chennai in the last 24 hours. Things are very much under control. Highest rainfall has been recorded in Sholinganallur and Teynampet area, around 6 cm. No power cuts were encountered in any area in Chennai.”
“Tree falling has been reported in around 8 areas and the team is already on duty to clear it. All the trees will be cleared in approximately one to one and a half hours after the rain has stopped. 26 teams from NDRF and SDRF have been readily positioned in Chennai and all the coastal areas. Out of 22 subways in Chennai, two subways have been flooded and the traffic has been closed,” informed the Deputy CM.
“The pumping motors are ready and draining. Water stagnation has been reported in 300 locations and the pumping work is in progress. Tamil Nadu special health camp for the rainy season has been started in 1000 locations all over the state and around 100 health camps have been started in Chennai alone by the concerned department,” added Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected areas around Narayanapuram Lake, between Pallikaranai and Kovilambakkam. Minister for HR&CE, P.K. Sekar Babu, and Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya, also accompanied him during the inspection.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Tuesday directed the officials to call off the scheduled online classes for students.
