The election of Rajya Sabha seats to West Bengal, Goa and Gujarat has been scheduled to be held on July 24, the Election Commission (EC) said on Tuesday. The counting of the votes has been scheduled for the same day which will begin at 5 pm, an hour after the conclusion of voting.
As per the notification released by the poll panel, the 10 seats in the Upper House of Parliament are falling vacant in July and August with Vinay D Tendulkar from Goa, Jaishankar from Gujarat and Derek O’Brien from West Bengal being among those completing their tenures.
While Vinay D Tendulkar from Goa is retiring on July 28, Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya, Lokhandwala Jugalsinh Mathurji, and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar Krishnaswamy are retiring from Rajya Sabha on August 18.
In West Bengal, six Rajya Sabha members – Derek O’Brien, Sushmita Dev, Sola Sena, Pradip Bhattacharya, Shanta Chhetri and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray – are retiring on August 18.
According to a statement issued by the EC, the 10 members are retiring between July 28 and August 18 on the completion of their six-year term in the Upper House.
In another statement, the Election Commission (EC) said a bypoll will be conducted on July 24 to fill the vacancy in the Rajya Sabha resulting from the resignation of TMC’s Luizinho Joaquim Faleiro from West Bengal.
Luizinho Faleiro had tendered his resignation in April, even though his term was originally set to expire in April 2026.
