HYDERABAD, AHMEDABAD, OCT 22

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the Gujarat government’s ‘revdi’ culture was inappropriate and that waiving off fines imposed during traffic rules violations amounted to risking the lives of the public.

In 2021, Gujarat saw 15,200 road traffic accidents in which 7,457 people lost their lives. This ‘revdi’ bonanza by BJP Gujarat govt is putting people’s lives at risk https://t.co/ExBBiImjPK

Denouncing the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Gujarat government for risking the lives of the public, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said ‘revdi‘ culture was inappropriate. The condemnation came to the fore after Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi announced punitive fines would be waived in the state between October 21 and October 27.

The BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been vocal against the culture of offering freebies to woo voters.

The minister on Friday said that no person shall be fined for and charged with traffic violations during the said period. In the spirit of Diwali and other festivals, the Gujarat minister made these announcements. He had said that a violator would be apprehended and stopped however, he would be given a flower, instead of an invoice of a fine.

“Starting today, 21st October, until 27th October, Gujarat Traffic Police will not charge any fine from citizens. This does not mean you (the public) should not follow traffic rules, but if you make a mistake, you will not be paying a fine for it,” Sanghavi said.

However, it did not sit well with Owaisi.

Taking to Twitter, the AIMIM chief said, “In 2021, Gujarat saw 15,200 road traffic accidents in which 7,457 people lost their lives. This ‘revdi’ bonanza by the BJP Gujarat govt is putting people’s lives at risk”

No fine for flouting traffic rules in Gujarat during Diwali: Sanghavi

Taking to Twitter, Sanghavi said, “It has been decided not to collect any kind of traffic fine from the public till the next date, October 27. The decision has been taken in the public interest and not used to break the law. If someone breaks the rules, the Gujarat police will persuade them not to break the rules by giving flowers.“

Deeming the decision as the government’s call, he said, “Diwali is the biggest festival of lights in Indian culture. This festival comes with the colours of rangolis, an abundance of sweets and the excitement of lamps and crackers. On the occasion of this festival, one more public decision of Mr Bhupendra Patel Ji, Chief Minister of Mridu and Makkam Gujarat Government.”

Sanghavi hit back later in the day without naming anyone, saying those doing politics over the issue will get a befitting reply from middle-class citizens.

“Middle-class citizens go out during Diwali to do shopping with their family with whatever they have saved during the year. Many also go out on their two-wheelers with their aged parents. People many times forget to wear helmets or carry a driving license. Instead of collecting fine, we will give them a flower to make them realise their mistake,” the minister said in Surat.

The intention was to ensure that people’s “Diwali is not spoiled” due to traffic fines, he said.

“On the other hand, we do not consider racing by bikers on roads a mistake. This is an intentional crime. Gujarat police very well knows the difference between unintentional mistake and crime. Surat police have caught many such bikers in the last few days. So no one needs to teach us anything on that,” Sanghavi said.
