Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) and Union Territory of Puducherry Hub for Empowerment of Women (UTPHEW) in association with Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) has organized an event on “Creating a Safer World for Women: Awareness and Advocacy” at Rashtriya Raksha University, Puducherry Campus Auditorium on Monday. This marks the observance of two significant days – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and National Cyber Security Day.
Director-cum-Under Secretary of the Department of Women and Child Development P Muthumeena, SP (Wireless / Cyber Crime) cum Web Officer), Dr S Bascarane were the guests of honors. The invited experts spoke on prevention of violence against women and cyber security thus creating awareness among the working women on the possible threats targeted against them. More than 200 working women from various departments under government of Puducherry took part in this program.
With a commitment to enhancing awareness about crimes against women, RRU Puducherry campus organized this comprehensive awareness program.

The first talk titled, “Prevention of Violence Against Women – A way forward” was delivered by Shivalaxmi Arumugham, Assistant Professor of Criminology at RRU. She spoke on various types of violence perpetrated against women and highlighted the need to study violent behavior and assist victims psychologically.
Followed by this, Suriya, Teaching Cum Research Officer (IT), RRU, spoke on “Digital Empowerment: Safeguarding Women Online” in which she elaborated on the types of cybercrime against women and the underlying reasons for vulnerability among victims.
Then, Sriram, Cyber Security Researcher, Founder and Technical Director, Prime Fort, Chennai conducted an interactive session on “Unveiling the Myths about Cyber Security” by answering the queries on the troubles women face everyday over Internet. He clarified the differences between Cyber Forensics, Cyber Crime and Cyber Security which are the most commonly misunderstood terms. He elucidated on basic principles of ‘confidentiality’, ‘integrity’ and ‘availability’ that are crucial for ensuring a cyber safe organization.
Then, Dr. S. Bascarane, SP (Wireless Cyber CCTNS WIM), Puducherry Police spoke on how to report a cybercrime through various portals, including toll free numbers 1930 (Cybercrime Against Women) and 112 (Conventional crimes against women). He introduced the whole team of Puducherry Cyber Crime Cell and explained how the team works in coordination with the central government and effectively on ground in resolving the filed complaints.
Finally, Soloman briefed about one-stop centers and ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme. P Muthumeena, Director-cum-Under Secretary of the Department of Women and Child Development, thanked the gathering and promised to arrange more awareness and training session for women and men.
Rastriya Raksha University aims to become an academic-research-training ecosystem for national security and the police. With the aim of expanding the university’s presence and service to the nation (sec 4(4) of the RRU Act 2020), RRU inaugurated its fourth extension campus in the union territory of Puducherry recently. This campus offers Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Police Administration, as well as the Postgraduate Diploma in Cyber Security and Digital Forensic program.
