In an effort to instill in citizens the importance of keeping the environment clean and ensuring a litter-free atmosphere, RN Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway launched Swachhta Pakhwara (Fortnight) by administering Swachhata pledge to officers and staff at here on Friday.

The Swachhta Pakhwara programme is a fortnight-long drive observed to involve participation of citizens in Swachhata activities.

All the six Divisions of Southern Railway, viz., Chennai, Salem, Madurai, Tiruchchirappalli, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram also kick started the drive on Saturday with the Divisional Railway Managers of the respective Divisions administering the Swachhata pledge to the employees.
Thematic drives and outreach campaigns
In order to effectively spread the message of Swachhata, each day of the Swachhata Pakhwada entails a theme dedicated for specific activities which include Clean Stations, Clean Trains, Clean Water, Clean Food and Clean Tracks. Further, extensive outreach campaigns utilizing digital media and PA systems will be regularly undertaken to educate rail users on the use of bio-toilets, litter-free stations, avoiding single-use plastics and other such cleanliness habits.
On Day-2 (16.09.2023) & Day-3 (17.09.2023) of the Swachhata Pakhwada, a host of activities were carried out at railway stations, field offices, workshops and other units across the zone. Railway employees, conservancy staff, Scouts & Guides, School & College students, NGOs and volunteers participated in large numbers.
A glimpse of the activities marking Swachhata Pakhwada on Day-2 & Day-3
- 126 Scouts & Guides participated in a painting competition held at SR Headquarters on Cleanliness theme
- Tree sapling plantation drive and display of anti-littering awareness posters at Kanniyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram stations
- Swachhata awareness rally and distribution of pamphlets to passengers at Guruvayur, Kochuveli, Thiruvananthapuram stations and EMU Car Shed, Velachery
- Shramdaan by staff and volunteers at Ernakulam Junction and Thiruvananthapuram Central
- Seminar on sanitation and upkeep of station premises at Kannur, Ottapalam and Tirur stations.
- Educative pamphlets were distributed to onboard passengers at Palakkad Junction, Kozhikkode, Mangaluru Central, Kannur and Guruvayur.
- Exhibition of eco-friendly alternatives for plastics and a Mime show by students at Thiruvananthapuram Central
- The upcoming two days, 18.09.2023 & 19.09.2023 will be dedicated to the ‘Clean Stations’ theme and intensive cleaning activities will be undertaken.
