The Salem Division of Southern Railway on Tuesday announced that it has earned a whopping revenue of Rs 128.79 crores, an increase of 11.25 percent,  in loading of freight and parcels during the first half of this financial year – April – September, 2022, as compared with the corresponding period last year, says release.

Salem Division excelled in loading Freight & Parcels during the first half of this FY (Apr. – Sept., 2022).

Freight Loading increase 8.66%

The Salem Division of Southern Railway loaded 15,78,054 tonnes of freight during April – September, 2022, earning Rs.128.79 crores.  During April – September, 2021, the Division had loaded 14,52,215 tonnes of freight and earned Rs115.77 crores.  This is a substantial increase in the quantity of freight loaded and revenue earned.

The Salem Division has loaded 8.66% more freight and has earned 11.25% more revenue during April – September, 2022 as compared with the corresponding period last year.  The freight loaded includes Petroleum Products, Cement, Iron & Steel Blooms and Containers.

Petroleum Products were loaded at Irugur and transported to places such as Mysore, Devangonthi (Bengaluru), Gooty and Raichur.  Cement, loaded at Palayam and Virarakkiyam near Karur, were moved to various destinations such as Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Irugur, Kudal Nagar (Madurai), Tirunelveli and places in Kerala and Karnataka.  Iron & Steel Blooms were loaded at Mecheri Road and carried to Karaikal Port, Chennai Harbour, Mormugao Harbour, Ahmedabad, etc.

To mention the Volume of Originating Freight – 9,23,000 tonnes of Petroleum Products, 2,83,000 tonnes of Cement and 1,45,000 tonnes of Iron & Steel Blooms were loaded in Salem Division and moved to various destinations across the country.

Growth in Loading of Parcels

The Salem Division performed well in transportation of parcels, too.  The Division loaded 23,185 Tonnes of parcels during April – September, 2022 through which it earned Rs 11.86 crores.  During April – September, 2021, the Division loaded 17,709 Tonnes of parcels and earned Rs10.24 crore.  This marks an increase in the quantity of parcels loaded and revenue earned.

Salem Division has loaded 30.93% more Parcels and has earned 15.87% more revenue during April – September, 2022 as compared with the same period last year.

Vegetables & Fruits and Engineering products were loaded from Coimbatore and sent to destinations such as New Delhi, Guwahati, etc.  From Tiruppur, Cotton Hosieries were transported to various States including Maharashtra and West Bengal.  And, Eggs were moved from Erode, through parcel vans, to places such as Patna, Malda, Guwahati, etc.  Apart from these, various products were transported from Salem and Karur, too.
