Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) celebrated World Food Day 2025 on Thursday with an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA), Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, and former Director General, ICAR and Director, IARI-New Delhi.
Delivering the inaugural address, Dr. Mohapatra, one of India’s most respected agricultural scientists and policy leaders, spoke passionately about food security, sustainable agriculture, and innovation-led growth in Indian farming. Drawing from his extensive research in plant genomics and crop improvement, he highlighted the transformative potential of biotechnology in ensuring both productivity and resilience in the face of climate change.
“India’s strength lies in the combination of scientific innovation and traditional agricultural wisdom,” Dr. Mohapatra said. “By integrating biotechnology with the time-tested practices of our farmers, we can create a future where every citizen has access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food. Biotechnology must not remain confined to laboratories — it must reach our fields and farmers.”
The event, GBU’s first-ever celebration of World Food Day, brought together students, researchers, and faculty for a day of learning and creativity. Interactive activities such as an Ideathon, Meme Awareness Campaign, Treasure Hunt, and Pictionary encouraged participants to think innovatively about global food challenges and sustainable solutions.
The celebrations concluded with a valedictory session that reaffirmed GBU’s commitment to advancing biotechnology education and translational research for sustainable, equitable, and resilient food systems.
Through initiatives like these, GBU continues to nurture young minds to contribute to India’s vision of becoming a global leader in agricultural biotechnology and food security.
