CHENNAI, JUNE 22

When no one, including relatives and friends, is ready to accept and cremate or bury the bodies of corona victims over the fear of infection, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) had come to their rescue irrespective of faith across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and neighbouring Puducherry. It had disposed of over 39 such bodies, a party release said.

According to A.K. Kareem, State Coordinator, SDPI, the party has established 18 teams comprising 6 volunteers each for this purpose.

The bodies which were not claimed or refused to be taken up for cremation or burials by the relatives were handed over to these teams by the authorities of the government hospitals for cremation.

The teams undertake the last rites according to the custom of the faiths of the corona victims after following the safety protocols of the government.

The party has provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), including safety jackets, face masks and headgears etc to wear while cremating the bodies, Kareem said.

The voluntary team had so far cremated 39 victims of corona across the state, including Chennai and neighbouring Puducherry.

The humanitarian gesture of the party would continue till the fight against coronavirus continues, Kareem added.
