In an awe-inspiring spiritual spectacle, millions of devotees gathered at the iconic Art of Living Foundation International Center in Bengaluru to celebrate Maha Shivaratri in the divine presence of global spiritual master Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, immersing themselves in profound meditation, sacred rituals and collective spiritual awakening.
The landmark celebration, marking the organisation’s 45th year, witnessed over a million devotees entering deep stillness as Gurudev guided them into one of the most powerful meditative experiences on the auspicious night dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Picture this—a sea of humanity united in silence, devotion and bliss, as Gurudev, radiating serenity, led seekers into higher states of consciousness, creating a moment of rare spiritual transcendence.
Gurudev’s Divine Message: Shiva Is the Essence of Consciousness
Delivering a profound spiritual message, Gurudev revealed the deeper significance of Maha Shivaratri and its transformative power.
“Mahashivratri is when the spirit lifts above the material world to something ethereal,” Gurudev shared.
He illuminated the omnipresence of Shiva within all existence:
“Shiva is present in every particle. The very nature of our consciousness is Shiva. To be immersed in Shiva is devotion, and to see Shiva in everyone is service. That which is imperishable is within us.”
Emphasising the power of faith and devotion, he added:
“If we even have this much faith, we become joyful. There will be no lack in life. It is believed that if you participate in Shivratri with devotion and love, then all your desires anyway get fulfilled.”
Explaining the mystical manifestation of Mahakaal, Gurudev said:
“How does Mahakaal manifest? He shines as the light within the hearts of yogis.”
Historic Somnath Jyotirlinga Relics Darshan Elevates Sacred Experience
A deeply emotional highlight of the celebrations was the rare darshan of the recently discovered relics of the original Somnath Jyotirlinga, believed to have been destroyed during the invasion of Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 CE.
Devotees described the darshan as a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual blessing, connecting them with India’s timeless spiritual heritage.
Sacred Rudra Puja and Global Participation Unite Humanity in Devotion
The central spiritual ritual of the evening was the powerful Rudra Puja, a sacred Vedic ceremony invoking Lord Shiva’s transformative energy and symbolising the dissolution of negativity and awakening of higher consciousness.
Rooted in ancient Vedic chants from the Sri Rudram, the ritual is believed to purify the environment and bring peace, prosperity and collective well-being.
The Rudra Puja was simultaneously organised across 150 locations worldwide, including Canada, Dubai and Germany, creating a global wave of devotion.
Devotees from over 50 countries—including Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Malaysia, Thailand, Bulgaria, Arab nations, China and across Europe and Southeast Asia—sang, meditated and celebrated in spiritual unity.
Devotees Share Transformative Spiritual Experiences
Participants described the event as deeply moving and life-changing.
Ankei, an 80-year-old Art of Living teacher from the Netherlands, shared:
“The atmosphere was very joyful here, the people are so nice, so beautiful, and helpful. My eyes filled up with tears when I saw Gurudev arrive for the Puja. That was a very happy and fulfilling moment for me.”
Olga from Russia reflected:
“It’s like coming home. I feel energized and relaxed here and will take the same energy and joy back to my country and share with people there.”
Isabelle, visiting from the Netherlands, said:
“I absolutely love it here. The atmosphere is charged with devotion and energy, and look at all the plants and animals, the music, and Gurudev’s presence adds magic to all of this!”
Massive Mahaprasadam Seva and Record Global Participation
The ashram embodied the spirit of service and celebration, with over 3 lakh Mahaprasadam meals served, prepared using more than 15 tons of vegetables by thousands of volunteers.
Adding to the auspiciousness, more than two dozen Vedic weddings and Shashti Purti ceremonies were solemnised in Gurudev’s divine presence.
In a record-breaking development, over a lakh devotees from 120 countries joined the celebrations online, expanding the spiritual experience beyond physical boundaries and reinforcing the universal appeal of Maha Shivaratri.
As chants echoed through the ashram and seekers departed with renewed joy and inner peace, Gurudev’s timeless message resonated deeply—that Shiva is not distant, but alive within every heart, waiting to be realised.
