In an era where rapid change demands constant learning, Group Captain Puneet Chadha of the Indian Air Force has emerged as a compelling symbol of lifelong education and disciplined upskilling. The serving helicopter pilot was awarded the Gold Medal for securing first rank in MA in Mass Communication at the convocation ceremony of Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) on December 11, graced by PDEU President Mukesh Ambani and Chief Guest Sudhir Mehta, Chairman of the Torrent Group.

The achievement is not an isolated academic milestone but part of a larger, inspiring journey. Group Captain Chadha already holds three Master’s degrees—in History, Defence and Strategic Studies, and Business Administration—along with two postgraduate diplomas in Rural Development and Disaster Management. The MA programme was pursued during study leave sanctioned by the Armed Forces, underlining the institution’s emphasis on intellectual growth alongside operational excellence.

Echoing the timeless wisdom of the Thirukkural, which says, “What one has learned is a handful of sand;  what one has not learned is the size of the world,”
Group Captain Chadha’s academic pursuit reflects the belief that learning is boundless and humility is its foundation.

Commenting on his achievement, Group Captain Puneet Chadha summed up his philosophy succinctly:

“Uniform teaches us discipline; education teaches us perspective. In a fast-changing world, constant upskilling is not an option—it is a responsibility, especially for those who lead.”

Commissioned into the Indian Air Force in December 1995, Group Captain Chadha hails from Jammu and was educated at Udgam School for Children and St Xavier’s, Loyola Hall, Ahmedabad. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, he has logged over 3,000 flying hours on a wide range of aircraft including MiG-21, Mi-8, Mi-17 variants, Iskra, and Chetak helicopters.

His operational record spans Operation Parakram, counter-insurgency missions in the North and North East, and critical disaster relief operations—from the Odisha Super Cyclone and Sri Lanka Tsunami to earthquake relief in Uri and flood relief in Gujarat. As part of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Congo (MONUC), he flew extensively in conflict zones under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.

Sangam literature, centuries ago, celebrated collective learning and shared wisdom. One such thought resonates deeply today:

(The finest wealth one can possess is knowledge gained by listening and learning).
Group Captain Chadha’s journey exemplifies this spirit of group upskilling, where individual excellence elevates institutions, teams, and society at large.

Having served at Air Headquarters, South Western Air Command, Tri-Services Command at Port Blair, and as Commanding Officer of 3 Gujarat Air NCC Squadron at Bhavnagar, he currently contributes to academia as a member of the expert committee at Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management. With UGC-NET qualifications in History and Defence Studies, he is now pursuing a PhD at the Central University of Gujarat.

Beyond medals and degrees, his commitment to the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen and widows of armed forces personnel adds a human dimension to his achievements.

At a time when India is pushing towards a knowledge-driven economy, Group Captain Puneet Chadha’s example sends a clear message to the youth: learning never ends, and upskilling—individually and collectively—is the strongest form of national service.
