A South Indian mutt in Varanasi comes to the rescue of nearly 110 Tamils stranded in Kedhar Ghat following the lockdown announced by the Centre to contain the spread of coronavirus.
All of them were pilgrims who had gone to Kedhar Ghat on a spiritual tour but stranded after the lockdown announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fight against coronavirus.
Of the 110 devotees struck in Kedhar Ghat, 14 were from Chennai, Trichirappalli 56, Madurai 13, Tirupur 15 and 9 hailing from Hosur in Tamil Nadu.
“When we, Kumarasamy Mutt in Varanasi, got the information that 110 Tamils have stranded in Kedhar Ghat we reached out to them and gave asylum since March 22. We provided them boarding and lodging facilities, including two meals daily,” said the Mutt administrator Rajkumar Raja.
Besides, these, the mutt is providing two meals a day to those caught in lockdown, poor labourers, beggars and also policemen every day, Rajkumar said.
A. Manikandan, Sub-Collector serving in Varanasi had rescued 22 devotees from Puducherry recently. Further, the IAS official had also made all arrangements for safe shelter, food for over 200 stranded
Tamils on the banks of River Ganges and 32 devotees stranded in Sonar Ghat.
Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Puducherry Collector Arun had appealed the UP Government to take care of 22 devotees from the Union Territory.
15 lorry drivers from Tamilnadu stranded in Sonbathra district in UP were taken care of by the district collector S. Rajalingam, media reports said.
