Spectacular cultural programmes by the RPF, impressive Dog Show by the Southern Railway Dog Squad and performances by various departments, including the Railway schools and Ashraya school for special children enthralled all at the Railway Stadium, Perambur, Chennai as the Southern Railway celebrated the 77th Independence Day here on Tuesday.

Southern Railway General Manager RN Singh hoisted the National Flag in the presence of GM Eswara Rao, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, RPF. The GM accepted the guard of honour presented by the RPF contingents, including Women Platoons and St John’s Ambulance Brigade.

- During the first 4 months of the current year also, SR sustained the growth momentum registering total earnings of Rs 3,883 Crores, which is 11% higher over the same period of last year
Addressing the gathering, the General Manager said, “Indian Railways is marching ahead providing modern world-class stations and enhancing the convenience of passengers by introducing ultra-modern Vande Bharat trains and state-of-the-art rolling stocks.”
Commending the performance of Southern Railway in his keynote address, the General Manager briefly outlined the various performance highlights of the zone, especially about the various infrastructure, electrification, engineering and safety works.
Growth trajectory of SR
- During 2022-23, Southern Railway’s gross earnings stood at about Rs 11,000 Crores, 51% higher than 2021-22. During the first 4 months of the current year also, SR sustained the growth momentum registering total earnings of Rs 3,883 Crores, which is 11% higher over the same period of last year.
- Freight loading was 24% higher while passenger footfall grew by 89% last year
- 92.5% Punctuality was achieved in 2022-23 compared to 88% in 2021-22
- For the benefit of passengers, 3 Vande Bharat Train services have been introduced over Southern Railway and having enhanced speed and modern facilities, these premium trains are highly patronized.
- Southern Railway enhanced the speeds over a record 2,037 Route kms in 2022-23 from 110 to 130 Kmph, and from 80/90 to 110 kmph.
- Southern Railway has also done well in the network augmentation too. During 2022-23, we added 178 Kms to the network comprising 52 Kms Gauge conversion and 126 kms Doubling.
- In Southern Railway, 90 stations have been identified for upgradation under “Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme” and 21 stations have been taken up for major Station Redevelopment, which would enhance the travel experience of our passengers to world class standards.
- Prioritizing safety, 40 bridges have been rehabilitated and 75 ROBs/RUBs have been constructed in 2022-23
- On the green energy front, last year 58 lac units solar power was generated, amounting to a savings of Rs.2.7 crores. Also, 250 lac units of wind energy were generated, amounting to savings of Rs.13.7 crores.
- RPF team rescued 2205 runaway children and saved 62 precious lives during 2022-23
- l During 2022-23, 1647 candidates were given appointment on Southern Railway and during 2023-24 till July 2023,6960 candidates have already been given appointment.
The program was attended by Kaushal Kishore, Additional General Manager, Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway, B Viswanath Eerya , Divisional Railway Manager/Chennai, Sonia Singh, President of Southern Railway Women’s Headquarters Organisation, Officers & Staff and their family members, and Representatives of Labour Unions and Associations of Southern Railway.
GK Gupta, Chief Administrative Officer, Railway Construction Organisation, Egmore, B Viswanath Eerya, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai, Samir Dighe, Chief Project Manager/Railway Electrification and Prasanta Kumar Sahu, Member/Technical, Railway Claims Tribunal hoisted the National flag at the respective Railway offices in Chennai.
Independence Day celebrations were held in Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Thiruvananthapuram, Madurai and Palghat Divisional Railway Offices, Integral Coach Factory and other Railway offices across the Southern Railway.
