Final 71-km Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi stretch completes the Zone’s electrification journey; seamless electric operations to boost efficiency, reliability and green mobility. From the first electric traction run in 1931 to a completely electrified 5,068-km broad-gauge network in 2026, Southern Railway has completed a 95-year journey into the electric era.

With the electrification of the final 71 Route Kilometre (RKM) Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi section, Southern Railway has achieved 100% electrification of its entire 5,068-RKM Broad Gauge (BG) network—a trail-blazing milestone that puts the entire Zone on an electric traction grid.

  • Final 71-km Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi stretch completes electrification of the entire 5,068-RKM Broad Gauge network
  • 95-year journey from Madras’ first electric traction service in 1931 culminates in a fully electrified Southern Railway
  • Seamless electric train operations across the Zone to eliminate traction-change requirements and improve locomotive utilisation
  • Milestone promises greater operational efficiency, lower fossil-fuel dependence and a cleaner, greener railway future

The statutory inspection of the newly electrified section was successfully completed on September 9, 2026, by Ganesh, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Southern Railway, marking the final operational link in the Zone’s BG electrification programme.

The achievement means electric trains can now operate seamlessly across Southern Railway’s entire BG network without the need for traction change, creating greater operational flexibility and improving the utilisation of electric locomotives.

The last 71 km completes the electric circuit

The Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi stretch was the final piece of the electrification puzzle. Its completion brings all 5,068 RKM of Southern Railway’s BG network under electric traction.

Full electrification is expected to enhance locomotive utilisation, operational flexibility and the reliability and efficiency of train services, while supporting faster and smoother train movement.

It will also reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen Southern Railway’s push towards greener, cleaner and more sustainable rail transportation.

The achievement forms part of the wider modernisation of the Zone, with the fully electrified network expected to deliver gains in operational and energy efficiency while creating a more sustainable and future-ready railway system.

A 95-year journey from 1931 to 2026

Southern Railway’s tryst with electric traction dates back to May 11, 1931, when Madras became the second metropolitan city in India, after Bombay, to introduce electric traction.

The journey gathered further momentum in 1968, when 25 kV AC electrification between Madras Beach and Tambaram was commissioned.

Nearly six decades later, that pioneering beginning has culminated in the electrification of the Zone’s entire 5,068-km Broad Gauge network.

The completion of the Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi section therefore represents more than the electrification of another railway stretch—it marks the culmination of a transformation from early electric traction to a fully electrified, energy-efficient and future-ready railway network.
