Revenue Engine at Full Throttle
Southern Railway recorded a stellar ₹8,271.47 crore in originating passenger revenue, achieving the highest additional revenue gain of ₹735.78 crore among all zones.
This marks a 9.8% year-on-year growth, reinforcing its leadership in commercial performance and passenger trust.
Packed to Capacity: Occupancy Redefined
Demonstrating unmatched demand management, SR achieved:
- 96% of reserved trains with over 75% occupancy
- 2.49 lakh trips running at optimal capacity out of 2.6 lakh
This far outpaces the national average of 87%, underlining operational excellence.
Explaining the dynamics, officials noted: “If occupancy rate % is more than 100%, it is because one seat/berth is allotted to passengers between any two different enroute stations.”
Special Trains, Special Success
In a major operational feat, SR led all zones with:
- 1,312 passengers per trip in special trains (vs national average of 894)
- 32.97 lakh passengers carried across 2,513 trips
This highlights optimal utilisation and strong passenger demand.
Tatkal Triumph: Turning Demand into Revenue
Southern Railway achieved the highest Tatkal quota utilisation in India, with:
- Over 75% utilisation in 92% of trains (national average: 71%)
In revenue terms:
- ₹267.05 crore earned against ₹263.96 crore potential
- 101.17% efficiency, the best in Indian Railways
Premium Tatkal added another feather:
- ₹594.36 crore earnings, accounting for 18.63% of IR’s total

Every Seat Counts: 170% Utilisation Breakthrough
In a remarkable innovation, SR achieved 170% seat utilisation through current booking, converting:
- 5.8 million vacant seats into 9.8 million passenger journeys
This reflects a powerful philosophy—no berth goes unused.
Vande Bharat: Speed Meets Strategy
Southern Railway dominated the premium segment with:
- No.1 rank in Vande Bharat occupancy nationwide
- Record 187.78% occupancy for Train No. 20632 (Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru Central)
A key innovation in PRS systems enabled:
- Booking of vacant seats till 15 minutes before departure
- 180% surge in passengers (6.01 lakh vs 2.14 lakh)
- Revenue jump from ₹15.22 crore to ₹45.37 crore

Digital Leap: Cashless, Seamless, Smart
Southern Railway also led the digital revolution:
- 53.64% digital transactions in unreserved ticketing (No.1 in IR)
- ₹324 crore digital transactions at reservation counters
- 33% digital share vs national average of 21%
With M-UTS deployed at 32 halt stations, SR is redefining last-mile convenience.
Top Trains, Top Trust
SR’s dominance is reflected in national rankings:
- 6 of top 10 most occupied trains originate from SR
- Iconic services like Parasuram Express, Kerala Express, Himsagar Express feature prominently
