To spread awareness among the citizens of Gujarat and Porbandar about Indian Navy’s vital role and responsibilities and as part of events leading up to Navy Day celebrations on December 4, a grand ceremony was organised at Chowpatti, Porbandar on Saturday to commemorate the Indian Navy’s valorous actions and pivotal role during the 1971 Indo-Pak War.

The event was meticulously orchestrated by the Indian Navy’s Porbandar-based Headquarters, Gujarat, Daman & Diu Naval Area. Senior officers of the Navy, District administration and other dignitaries graced the occasion.

In a first, various organisations including schools and colleges contributed in unison to the event. The show commenced with an impressive march past by the contingents from Indian Navy, National Cadet Corps (NCC), and Sea Cadets Corps (SCC), accompanied by stirring performances by the Indian Navy Band symbolizing unity and discipline – a true reflection of India’s progressive spirit. The sword displays by NCC and vibrant dance by SCC, captivated the audience with the finesse and precision of movement. Also, the Girl Band from the Rajkumar College, Rajkot mesmerised the audience by showcasing not just their musical talents but also the cultural richness prevalent in our educational institutions.

A flypast by Indian Naval aircraft and Naval Power Demonstration by ships was also conducted, exhibiting the technological prowess and maritime strength of the Indian Navy.
The audience were filled with patriotic fervour seeing the young students of Navy Children School performing to the tunes of ‘Lehra Do’ and the precise continuity drill by the young recently recruited Agniveers.
The Flag Officer Commanding Gujarat Naval Area during his address highlighted the significance of Gujarat as a maritime State and the importance accorded by the Indian Navy to the maritime aspects in the region. He also mentioned that the performances for the Navy Day Celebration were aimed to spread awareness among the citizens of Gujarat and Porbandar about Indian Navy’s vital role and responsibilities. It also depicts the readiness of Indian Navy as a Combat Ready, Cohesive, Credible and Future Proof force. These performances reflected the discipline, professional ethos, espirit-de-corps and focused training.
Navy day is celebrated every year on 4th December, every year to commemorate the Navy’s attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. As part of operation Trident and Operation Python, the 254 Missile Vessel Squadron, comprising of three missile vessels – Nirghat, Veer and Nipat carried out successful missile attacks just before the midnight of December 4, destroying oil fields and sinking Pakistani ships Khaiber, Muhafiz and MV Venus Challenger. These attacks by the Indian Navy was pivotal to the ultimate victory of the Indian Armed forces over Pakistan.
