T.V. Somanathan, Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Commercial Tax, Tamil Nadu has been shifted to the central service as the new Expenditure Secretary.
The 1987-batch IAS officer is returning to central service where he already had a stint in the Prime Minister’s Office between 2015 and 2017.
The Union Expenditure Secretary post was lying vacant since October. Somanathan holds a Ph.D in economics, besides a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Management Accountant and Chartered Secretary. He has worked in senior policy making positions in various departments in the central and state governments. As the commercial tax commissioner, he successfully implemented GST after he took charge when the new tax regime was introduced.
