Southern Railway has observed World Telecom and Information Society Day under the aegis of Chennai Chapter of the Institute of Railway Signal & Telecommunication Southern Railway (IRSTE) on Sunday.
A full day programme with an International Webinar was organised by the Signal & Telecommunication Department of Southern Railway, a release from the Chief Public Relations Officer B. Guganesan said.
The webinar was livestreamed for the benefit of wider audience. Pradeep Kumar, Member S&T/Railway Board was the Chief Guest on this occasion and John Thomas General Manager, Southern Railway was the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion from New Delhi over video conferencing, Pradeep Kumar, Member, Railway Board appreciated the efforts of Southern Railway in absorbing the latest Technology by organising seminars and webinars.
He mentioned that Railways has decided to modernise the Railway telecom Infrastructure by migrating to IP based communication, WiFi has been provided at 5500 stations which is being well appreciated by the ordinary passengers he said. He added that 5 MHz in 700 MHz spectrum has been allotted to Railway, which will further boost the efforts of Railways in serving the users.
He also mentioned that Railtel, a PSU of Ministry of Railways is doing yeomen service to the nation by providing fibre backbone not only for the Railways but also for the media service providers, he added.
John Thomas General Manager, Southern Railway, highlighted various achievements of S&T department of Southern Railway, the most important being quick migration to paperless working through adoption of e-office system.
R. Baskaran, Principal Chief Signal & Telecommunication, Southern Railway, brought out the salient features of the telecommunication system of Southern Railway. A road map was also presented to further improve the same.
The full day webinar had three sessions and a total of 9 papers were presented. Hundreds of Railway Officials and others participated in the webinar through webex platform provided by Railtel. The webinar also was webcast through Youtube. The participants appreciated the organisers for bringing in highly relevant and contemporary articles covering the entire gamut of Telecommunications.
