The Sri Lankan Navy apprehended 11 fishermen from Rameswaram along with a fishing trawler belonging to them on Monday for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters.
The navy was on a regular patrolling in the sea to prevent Indian fishermen from entering and fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters. According to fishermen in Rameswaram, more than 600 trawlers left the jetty for fishing on Monday. One of them has been seized by the navy and the crew was arrested.
According to an official statement from the Sri Lankan navy, they apprehended 11 Indian fishermen during a routine patrol and seized a trawler belonging to them along with their fish catch for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters off the Delft Island.
The arrested fishermen were escorted to their Navy base SLNS Elara, from there they will be taken for legal action against them after conducting a medical test.
Sri Lankan naval officials stated that due to the navy’s routine patrols in the island’s waters, the number of trespassing Indian fishing vessels has comparatively come down in the recent past.
