CHENNAI, DEC 26

The sudden move by the IIT-M management to close one of the institution gates facing Gandhi Road called “Krishna Gate’’ invited the ire of a section of the students.

The unannounced move by the IIT administration to construct a permanent wall was temporarily stopped after a small group of students protested on Tuesday night.

In spite of students’ protest, the gate was closed with barricades across the gate preventing students to use it.

Chintabar and Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, students’ collectives functioning within the campus, issued statements condemning the secrecy with which the move was made. They said the gate was frequently used by many students residing outside the campus on Gandhi Road. Students on campus also used the gate to access photocopy shops and eateries outside. It was also used by students studying in schools located inside the campus.

“Now, we may have to use the Velachery Gate, which is more than a kilometre away,” a student said.

IIT management could not be able to contact for their comments.
