Aiming to help the sugarcane farmers to make most of it, Isha Agriculture Movement conducted a specialised workshop on growing sugarcane organically and latest trends leading to increasing the value of sugarcane in Thanjavur on Sunday. More than 100 farmers from Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Villupuram, Perambalur, Trichy, Tiruvannamalai, Karur, and Namakkal districts participated in this workshop which was conducted at Isha’s farm in Nedar.
“Farmers who grow sugarcane can make more profits, if they make it into Jaggery themselves instead of selling it to mills,” said Pravin Kumar, a farmer from Arakonam District with experience in Organic Sugarcane farming, while sharing his journey of making Sugarcane farming financially lucrative. His session on how to set up a sugar mill and the intricacies of making jaggery was very well received by this gathering of sugarcane farmers.

In this hands-on training, farmers who are currently practicing variations, innovations and improvisations in sugarcane farming shared their success stories. Amongst others, Somasundaram from Sathyamangalam spoke about planting methods and how to nurture sugarcane, while Hariputhiran from Annur shared the blueprint of how a small mill, with just two people can produce jaggery. This was followed by a demonstration on methods to prepare jaggery, and simple tips on increasing profits such as making brown sugar out of sugarcane.
