AHMEDABAD, MAY 20

Stating that the Double Engine government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state government led by Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel have initiated measures to make the country a global manufacturing hub, Science and Technology Secretary Vijay Nehra said a high-level delegation led by him had conducted a roadshow in Taiwan last week to woo electronics and semiconductor manufacturers and got overwhelming response to  set up shops in Semicon City in Dholera SIR.

He was speaking at a seminar on “Ecosystem Opportunities for ESDM industry” hosted by Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA), the premier body representing the electronics industry in the country, at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, on Thursday.

Enunciating the govt policies and on future opportunities with a focus on MSMEs, Vijay Nehra, said, “Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister, India has targeted US$ 300 Billion of domestic electronics production and digital economy worth US$ 1 Trillion in 2025.  Along the spirit of Government of India’s policies, the Government of Gujarat has chosen a focussed policy-driven approach with the launch of an exclusive semiconductor policy and electronics policy with compelling incentives.  As one of India’s most industrialized states with a vibrant economy and excellent social infrastructure coupled with investor-friendly governance, Gujarat is the most preferred destination for electronics manufacturing.  The Government will announce many new investments in the semiconductor and electronics segment, soon.”

After the visit of Taiwanese electronics and semiconductor companies to Dholera SIR last year, to woo them the state government conducted a “roadshow” in Taiwan last week.

“The roadshow was held under the aegis of the Indian Embassy there without the help of any industry body. It was a pleasant surprise as the roadshow got overwhelming response and houseful.. Dozens of semiconductor majors have shown keen interest to set up shops in Semicon City in Dholera SIR. They were highly impressed with the excellent infrastructure and the industry-friendly policies of the government. This will change the industrial landscape between Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar,” Nehra added.

When asked about the number of Taiwanese companies coming to Gujarat, Nehra replied, “When a FAB unit is set up, equipment and machinery will come from multiple countries. This includes Advanced Materials from Europe. We have identified some land for ecosystem partners. We have the master plan ready with us.”

Explaining on the much touted Vedanta-Foxconn Rs 1.54 lakh crore semiconductor project in Gujarat, Nehra said, “Although the Centre had approved it an elaborate technical and financial appraisal is under way. It is at an advanced stage of appraisal by the Centre. The Government of India will take the decision after getting the DPR. Once the Centre clears it we will release the required land. With Vedanta acting as an anchor unit, the region will be developed for 1000 plus MSMEs to create a sustainable economic environment for hi-tech supply chain management.”

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed during the seminar between Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) and GESIA IT Association (GESIA) towards strategic partnership and sector development for Electronics and Semi-Conductor Manufacturing Design Systems in the State of Gujarat.

On this occasion, GESIA IT Association Chairman and Director, Pranav Pandya highlighted that “This collaboration is a favourable development for Gujarat’s Electronics and Semi-Conductor System Design (ESDM) and Information, Communication and Technology Sector (ICT) which will bring large transformation for technology collaboration research, and sector skill development”.

Videh Khare, IAS – Mission Director, Gujarat State Electronics Mission; Dr Ashwini Agarwal, Director, Applied Material; Dr. Seema Vinayak, Director SSPL (DRDO); RG Trasi, CEO, RIR Power Electronics Limited; Bhuwan Purohit, Ex. Director Rubamin Pvt. Ltd;, Sundeep Saxena. Addl. Secretary, ELCINA; and H M Patel, Chairman, Gandhinagar Electronics Zone Industries Association (GEZIA),  were present at the event.
