The annual scheme is expected to benefit nearly 2.22 crore rice ration card holders, reaffirming the State’s commitment to food security and inclusive celebration of the harvest festival. The decision also extends coverage to Sri Lankan Tamil families residing in rehabilitation camps, ensuring that vulnerable communities are not left out of the festivities.
A government order announcing the scheme was issued on December 31, 2025, by the Department of Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection, paving the way for district-level implementation in the coming days.
Essential Commodities for Every Eligible Household
As per the government order, each Pongal gift hamper will contain one kilogram of rice, one kilogram of sugar, and one sugarcane, reflecting the traditional ingredients associated with the Pongal festival.
The distribution will be carried out through the Public Distribution System (PDS), leveraging the State’s extensive network of fair price shops to ensure last-mile delivery. Officials said the procurement process for the essential commodities has already been initiated to facilitate timely distribution before the festival.
Wide Coverage Through Public Distribution Network
The scheme covers all rice ration card holders in Tamil Nadu, spanning both urban and rural households. By using the PDS infrastructure, the government aims to ensure uniform and efficient distribution across districts, minimising logistical bottlenecks during the festive period.
Inclusion of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in rehabilitation camps underscores the State’s broader welfare approach, officials noted, adding that special arrangements would be made to ensure seamless delivery in these locations.
Festival Welfare Initiative With Focus on Food Security
The Pongal gift hamper scheme has become one of Tamil Nadu’s most anticipated welfare announcements each year, helping families manage festival-related expenses while reinforcing food security.
While the current order focuses on distribution of essential commodities, a decision on any cash component, if applicable, is understood to be pending. Officials said further announcements would be made if additional benefits are approved.
The initiative once again highlights Tamil Nadu’s emphasis on festival-linked welfare measures, blending cultural tradition with targeted public support.
