In a landmark moment for Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure and economic future, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Madurai on March 1, 2026, to inaugurate, dedicate, and lay the foundation stone for major projects spanning Railways, Highways, and Prasar Bharati—delivering transformative benefits to millions of citizens across the state.

At the heart of this historic visit is the dedication of eight redeveloped Amrit Bharat railway stations and the Chennai Beach–Chennai Egmore fourth railway line project, together valued at ₹378 crore—ushering in a new era of speed, efficiency, and passenger comfort.

  • Narendra Modi to inaugurate transformative rail projects set to accelerate Tamil Nadu’s mobility and economic growth
  • Eight world-class Amrit Stations and Chennai’s vital fourth rail line promise faster, safer, and smarter travel
  • Massive infrastructure push to boost tourism, trade, employment, and regional development across the state
  • Thousands of daily commuters and local businesses to gain from modernised stations and decongested rail corridors

Under the visionary Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, eight key railway stations—Bommidi, Karaikkudi, Manaparai, Morappur, Pollachi, Sholavandan, Srivilliputhur, and Thiruvarur—have been redeveloped at a cost exceeding ₹105 crore.

These stations have been transformed into modern, accessible, and passenger-centric travel hubs featuring upgraded station buildings, enhanced platform shelters, spacious waiting halls, improved sanitation, lifts, foot over bridges, better parking, and advanced digital passenger information systems.

Blending regional architectural heritage with cutting-edge amenities, the redeveloped stations will enhance passenger convenience, strengthen regional connectivity, and stimulate tourism and local commerce. With this inauguration, Tamil Nadu now has 17 redeveloped Amrit Stations out of 77 identified under the national modernisation programme.

Chennai’s Lifeline Gets Stronger with Fourth Railway Line

Further strengthening Chennai’s suburban rail backbone, the Prime Minister will dedicate the 4.3-km Chennai Beach–Chennai Egmore fourth railway line, built at a cost of ₹273 crore.

This vital infrastructure upgrade will significantly decongest one of Chennai’s busiest rail corridors, allowing smoother operations, additional passenger and freight services, and improved punctuality—directly benefiting thousands of daily commuters.

The enhanced capacity will also support faster goods movement, strengthening supply chains and boosting industrial productivity across Tamil Nadu.

Transformative Impact on Economy, Mobility, and Regional Growth

These projects represent far more than infrastructure—they are catalysts for economic expansion and social mobility. Improved rail connectivity will enable easier access to jobs, education, healthcare, and markets, particularly for smaller towns and semi-urban regions.

Modern stations will also stimulate tourism, increase local business activity, and create employment opportunities, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as one of India’s leading economic engines.

The main event will be held at the AAI premises in Perungudi, Madurai, with simultaneous ceremonial events and live streaming across all eight redeveloped stations, allowing citizens statewide to participate in this historic milestone.

Together, these transformative rail projects mark a decisive leap toward a faster, safer, and more connected Tamil Nadu—empowering citizens, energising the economy, and redefining the future of travel across the state.
