NEW DELHI, FEB 9

Delivering direct benefits to passengers, industries and regional economies, Tamil Nadu has emerged as one of the major gainers in Indian Railways’ infrastructure push, with its annual railway budget allocation jumping over 8.5 times since 2014 to ₹7,611 crore in 2026–27. The surge in funding is translating into better connectivity, faster trains, modern stations, job creation and long-term industrial growth across the State.

— Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) February 9, 2026

Highlighting the scale of investment, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a series of posts on X:
“Budget allocation to Tamil Nadu has increased more than 8.5 times since 2014, reaching ₹7,611 crore in 2026–27.”

  • Rail outlay for Tamil Nadu touches ₹7,611 crore in 2026–27, unlocking faster travel and economic momentum
  • 77 Amrit stations to transform passenger experience; 18 already redeveloped across the State
  • High-speed and affordable trains expand options with Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat services
  • Near-total electrification and rapid track expansion boost efficiency and sustainability
  • Land acquisition delays flagged as key bottleneck in critical new line projects
  • Irugur–Podanur doubling set to convert Chennai–Coimbatore belt into high-capacity corridor

Modern Stations, Better Passenger Experience

A total of 77 Amrit stations in Tamil Nadu have been identified for complete redevelopment, aimed at creating world-class passenger amenities, seamless access and improved urban integration. Work has already been completed at 18 stations, marking visible on-ground progress.

More Trains, Faster and Affordable Travel

Rail connectivity in the State has seen a significant upgrade with nine pairs each of Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat Express services currently operational. These “Made in India” modern trains are ensuring faster, more comfortable and affordable travel for people across Tamil Nadu.

Electrification and Track Expansion Drive Efficiency

Since 2014, approximately 1,350 km of new tracks have been constructed in the State. Indian Railways in Tamil Nadu has also achieved 97% electrification, with 2,386 km of rail lines electrified, reducing operating costs, improving reliability and supporting India’s sustainability goals.

Land Acquisition: The Critical Challenge

Despite record investments, land acquisition remains a key hurdle. For ongoing projects, only 24% of the required land—1,052 hectares out of 4,326 hectares—has been handed over so far. Indian Railways has already paid ₹1,465 crore to the Tamil Nadu Government towards land acquisition.

Several strategic projects continue to face delays:

  • Madurai–Tuticorin new line via Aruppukkotai (144 km): 91% land acquisition pending
  • Tindivanam–Gingee–Tiruvannamalai new line (71.33 km): 86% land acquisition pending
  • Rameswaram–Dhanushkodi new line: Foundation stone laid by the Hon’ble Prime Minister in 2019, but land acquisition is yet to begin

Capacity Expansion to Power Economic Growth

Even amid these challenges, the Centre has sanctioned multiple new lines, doublings, and third and fourth lines, with DPRs prepared for further expansion to support Tamil Nadu’s growing industrial and logistics needs.

Irugur–Podanur Doubling: A Game-Changer for Tamil Nadu

One of the most impactful approvals for the State is the doubling of the Irugur–Podanur section (10.77 km) at a cost of ₹277.42 crore. This project will:

  • Enable 15 additional passenger trains per day
  • Add 3.12 MTPA freight capacity
  • Increase annual net earnings by ₹11.77 crore

With adjoining stretches already upgraded, this project will transform the Chennai–Coimbatore–Podanur belt into a high-capacity, four-line corridor, directly benefiting Coimbatore’s industrial hub, improving terminal operations at Podanur and supporting new train services to northern destinations.

Nationwide Rail Push Complements Tamil Nadu Growth

Alongside Tamil Nadu-focused projects, Indian Railways has approved major capacity, safety and efficiency upgrades across the country—including doubling, third and fourth lines, bypass corridors and electronic interlocking systems—strengthening national supply chains and passenger reliability.

With sustained investment and timely cooperation from State authorities, these initiatives are set to deliver faster journeys, safer operations, higher freight efficiency and durable economic growth, positioning Tamil Nadu as a key beneficiary of India’s rail transformation.
