Tamil Nadu’s pre-poll chessboard: Stalin’s Chanakya moves, Vijay’s political gamble and BJP’s Southern dream collide

Tamil Nadu’s political theatre is heating up ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with shifting alliances, family rivalries and strategic manoeuvres reshaping the battle for power in the Dravidian heartland.

  • Stalin recalibrates alliances, explores OPS factor to blunt BJP-AIADMK challenge
  • Actor-politician Vijay faces family-feud whispers even as TVK eyes kingmaker role
  • Premalatha and DMDK emerge as key pawns in coalition arithmetic
  • Modi-Shah duo confronts uphill battle to breach DMK’s Dravidian fortress
  • Sasikala’s quiet comeback bid adds another twist to Tamil Nadu’s high-stakes political drama

At the centre of the storm is Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, whose ruling DMK is carefully expanding its alliance matrix even as the opposition camp attempts to stitch together a formidable front to challenge the government.

Political observers say Stalin’s moves resemble a “Chanakya-style strategy” aimed at neutralising multiple threats simultaneously — from the BJP’s southern push to the emergence of actor-turned-politician Vijay as a potential disruptor.

Stalin’s Strategic Calculus

The DMK leadership has been working to strengthen its coalition by accommodating smaller parties and ensuring that allies remain within the fold as elections approach.

The allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to the DMDK, for instance, is widely seen as part of this broader strategy to keep the opposition fragmented while reinforcing the DMK-led alliance. At the same time, political watchers believe Stalin is exploring ways to blunt the impact of the BJP-AIADMK combine and prevent consolidation of anti-DMK votes.

Opposition leaders claim that the ruling party’s outreach reflects anxiety about growing public dissatisfaction over issues such as law and order, price rise and corruption allegations.

Vijay’s Political Gamble

The entry of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has injected fresh unpredictability into the political landscape.

Vijay has been positioning his party as a new alternative to both the DMK and the BJP-AIADMK alliance. Addressing party supporters recently, he sharpened his attack on the government, alleging that corruption had become institutionalised.

“Our state’s total budget is ₹4.39 lakh crore. Out of that, 30 per cent goes as ‘Stalin tax’ — 20 per cent to the Chief Minister and 10 per cent to his council of ministers,” Vijay alleged at a public event.

At the same time, his political debut has been accompanied by rumblings of internal and family tensions, with critics questioning whether the actor-politician can convert his massive fan base into a disciplined electoral machinery.

Political analysts say Vijay’s biggest challenge will be deciding whether to go solo or align with a broader anti-DMK coalition.

BJP’s Southern Push

Sensing an opportunity, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has openly appealed to Vijay to consider joining the AIADMK-led NDA, arguing that a divided opposition could inadvertently help the ruling DMK retain power.

Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad recently said that all parties opposed to the DMK should unite to avoid splitting the anti-incumbency vote.

“If Vijay’s objective is to prevent the DMK from returning to power, he should consider joining a broader opposition alliance,” he said.

The BJP leadership, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, has intensified its outreach in the state as part of its broader strategy to expand the party’s footprint in southern India.

However, breaking the Dravidian duopoly remains a daunting challenge.

Premalatha, OPS and the Coalition Game

Another crucial element in the evolving political puzzle is the role of Premalatha Vijayakanth and the DMDK, which could emerge as a decisive ally in the upcoming polls.

Meanwhile, speculation continues about possible political moves involving former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam (OPS) — developments that could alter the balance within the AIADMK camp and reshape alliance equations.

For Stalin, bringing rival factions closer or neutralising them through political accommodation could prove key to safeguarding the DMK’s electoral dominance.

Chinnamma’s Silent Return

Adding intrigue to the already complex landscape is the quiet re-emergence of V.K. Sasikala, popularly known as “Chinnamma.”

Once a powerful figure in the AIADMK ecosystem, Sasikala is believed to be exploring ways to regain political relevance in the run-up to the election.

Her possible comeback, analysts say, could further fragment the opposition vote unless rival factions find a way to reunite.

A High-Stakes Election

With multiple power centres — DMK, AIADMK, BJP, TVK and smaller regional players — competing for space, the upcoming election promises to be one of the most unpredictable contests in Tamil Nadu’s recent political history.

Vijay himself has framed the election as a direct confrontation with the ruling party.

“There is no history of the DMK forming the government twice consecutively,” he told party workers during a recent rally.

Whether Tamil Nadu’s electorate sticks with the Dravidian establishment or experiments with a new political force could determine the next chapter in the state’s political saga.
