Eminent Tamil and English feminist writer and social historian V Geetha will deliver the 10th edition of Umashankar Joshi Memorial lecture here on Saturday, announced Swati Joshi, Umashankar Joshi’s daughter and one of the trustees of Gangotri Trust, here on Wednesday.
V Geetha will deliver a lecture on “Dravidian and Different? What women writers have to say?” The programme is being held in memory of Jnanpith Award winner Umashankar Joshi, a prominent Gujarati poet, scholar and writer.
The event will be held at Ahmedabad Management Association at 6:00 pm.
Giving details about the programme, Swati Joshi, Trustee, Gangotri Trust said, “V Geetha is an eminent Tamil and English feminist writer and social historian based in Chennai. She is also Translator and Publisher at Tara Books. She has written in Tamil and English on gender, labour, caste, civil rights and education. Her published works include Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and the question of socialism in India; Undoing Impunity: Speech after sexual violence; and (with S Rajadurai), Towards a Non-Brahmin Millennium: from Iyothee Thass to Periyar.”

“Umashankar Joshi worked as a rationalist and was influenced by Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. He always tried to change the customs and attitudes of society. His works display nationalist sentiments and social awareness as well as concern for the predicament of human life in society. In line with his motto of introducing the works and thoughts of all Indian language writers to our Gujaratis, we have been holding this lecture series and this is our 10th edition. The trust has been translating texts from Indian and foreign languages into Gujarati,” added Swati Joshi.
Two other Trustees Abhijit Joshi and Manishi Jani, writer were also present at the event.
