The temple elephant of the Lord Subramanya Swami Temple at Thiruparankundram in Madurai had trampled mahout Kalimuthu to death on Sunday.
The elephant, christened as Deivayanai, had suddenly trampled the mahout while he was giving bath to it, temple sources said.
Grievously injured mahout was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) and succumbed to his injuries later.
The elephant was brought under control by another mahout later. Further investigations are on.
