CHENNAI, NOV 16
In a decisive political signal ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Sunday formally ruled out aligning with any political party — including the AIADMK, Congress or BJP — declaring that the party, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, will fight the polls independently.
The announcement extinguished the growing expectations of the AIADMK, whose leadership had been openly hoping for a rapprochement with Vijay following the Karur rally tragedy.
- Says no tie-up with AIADMK, Congress or BJP
- Vijay will be CM candidate, only accepting those who back his leadership
- TVK calls DMK “political enemy” and BJP “ideological enemy”
‘Not Even 1% Chance of Alliance with AIADMK or BJP’
TVK joint secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar delivered the strongest declaration yet on the party’s stand: “There is not even a 1 per cent chance of forming an alliance with AIADMK or the BJP. The DMK is our political enemy, and the BJP is our ideological enemy. We will not align with any party associated with them.”
Rejecting widespread rumours of backdoor talks, Kumar clarified that: “Our leader Vijay has not spoken with Congress or any other party regarding alliances. We are going solo.”
He reiterated that Vijay remains the party’s undisputed chief ministerial face:
“Thalapathy Vijay is our Chief Minister candidate. Those who accept his leadership are welcome to join our front — but we will not bend for alliances.”
AIADMK’s Expectations Crumble
The AIADMK, led by Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), had kept channels open, especially after AIADMK leaders publicly defended Vijay and the TVK during the aftermath of the Karur rally stampede, hoping that goodwill would translate into electoral partnership.
However, TVK’s categorical rejection has now shut the door on those expectations.
TVK Protests Statewide on Electoral Roll Issue
The announcement coincided with TVK’s statewide protests against the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, alleging irregularities and demanding transparency. The mobilisation is seen as part of the party’s strategy to position itself as a serious challenger in the 2026 race.
A Solo Battle — and a Message of Confidence
With this declaration, the TVK has sent a strong message to both Dravidian majors and national players: it seeks to carve out an independent political identity anchored in Vijay’s mass appeal and anti-establishment pitch.
The solo contest sets the stage for a three-cornered fight in several constituencies — and intensifies the political churn ahead of 2026.
