The party, however, will not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and will make its electoral debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election, the actor said in a statement.
“I am aiming a corruption-free, progressive, and secular government, considering the current political climate that divides people by religion, caste and one could witness corruption everywhere,” his statement read.
“2026 is our goal. After getting altricial from ECI and after 2024 Lok Sabha elections we will be deciding upon the symbol, flag, ideologies, policies, meet and greet with people and the proper beginning of our political jour way will begin. We are not contesting in the 2024 elections and we will not be supporting any of the party that is contesting,” the statement added.

In the statement, he further said, “Currently our party has applied for registration keeping in mind the time required for the work… Politics is not a hobby for me; It is my deepest passion and I want to devote myself fully to it.”
“To my best, the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has been doing a lot of public welfare activities for the past many years. But a lot of political changes cannot be made only through a non-profit organisation, a political power is needed. You all know the current political scenario. Wrongful administration and corrupt politics is on one hand, on the other hand discriminative and fascist politics to divide our people. On two sides obstacles have been placed for our development and unity.”
With this, the actor, 49, becomes the latest personality from Tamil Nadu’s film industry to enter politics.
Incidentally, right from 1967 the DMK and AIADMK are Tamil Nadu’s two main political outfits. All national parties have been taking piggyback ride on these parties for over half a century.
The BJP has been making all efforts to dislodge both the Dravidian parties by holding many events promoting Tamil pride. Two editions of Kashi Tamil Sangamam and the first edition of Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam were carried out for this prime purpose.
Two former chief ministers of the southern state, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa were actors, while M Karunanidhi, who also served as CM, was a screenwriter. While MG Ramachandran, known popularly by his initials MGR, founded the AIADMK, Jayalalithaa too was a senior member of the party. Karunanidhi, meanwhile, was a senior leader of the DMK, the state’s current ruling party.
DMDK founder Vijayakanth was also an actor in the Tamil film industry before becoming a politician. More recently, superstar Kamal Haasan founded Makkal Needhi Maiam (MKM) in February 2018.
