Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS) Ahmedabad Dr Banwari Lal inaugurated the two-day “Tax Clinic” organized for taxpayers by the Direct Taxes Committee of ICAI at Ahmedabad Branch of WIRC of ICAI at ‘ICAI Bhawan,’ 123, Sardar Patel Colony, near Usmanpura Bridge, Naranpura, Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Lauding the ICAI for organizing this event for the first time, Dr Banwari Lal, said, “Kautilya Chanakya developed a most comprehensive and successful taxation system almost two thousand years ago. The basic principle of Chanakya’s taxation doctrine was that the purpose of taxation must be to strengthen government to ensure public welfare and national development. Chanakya believed that the state must promote the economic welfare and fully regulate economic activities. “Kosha Moolo Danda”, Chanakya wrote in first chapter of Arthashastra; this means ‘revenue is the backbone of administration’. This verse in the Devanagari script is part of the official logo of the income tax department of India.”
“The government undertakes various welfare activities like defence, health, education, infrastructure development et al from the tax-payers money. By encouraging and helping the tax-payers to comply with the taxation regime, the ICAI has been working in tandem with the government. Thus tax-payers’ contribution in nation-building is appreciable.
