Thirumayam test for DMK: Cadre pulse tilts toward change as leadership weighs winnability vs continuity

Between loyalty and winnability, Thirumayam waits—where the whisper of cadres could shape the roar of the ballot. NE PHOTO

CHENNAI, MAR 24

As the electoral battle lines begin to sharpen in Thirumayam, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) finds itself at a crucial crossroads—whether to back continuity or pivot to a candidate seen as more aligned with the current grassroots mood.

At the centre of the debate is sitting MLA Ragupathi, whose tenure, despite ministerial stature, is facing visible scrutiny from sections of party cadres and voters alike.

  • Ground feedback signals growing fatigue with sitting MLA Ragupathi amid development concerns
  • Emergence of Kailasam reflects cadre push for grassroots connect and youth outreach
  • Caste arithmetic and local equations shape a tightly balanced electoral calculus
  • AIADMK’s Vairamuthu seen as a persistent challenger with sympathy edge
  • Final call rests on DMK high command’s strategy to blend loyalty, optics and winnability

A local DMK functionary said: “There is respect for seniority, but elections today are about connection. Cadres are asking who can stay rooted and win.”

Cadre Undercurrent: Call for a Fresh Face

Feedback emerging from within the constituency points to dissatisfaction over perceived gaps in local development and accessibility. Recent controversies have further complicated the optics.

Grassroots worker: “The concern is not just anti-incumbency—it’s about responsiveness. People want someone who is present and approachable.”

At the same time, internal discussions suggest that the party is carefully evaluating survey inputs before making a final call.

Kailasam’s rise: Youth connect meets social math

Against this backdrop, Kailasam has steadily gained traction as a viable alternative. A local face with sustained engagement among youth and students, his profile aligns with the party’s broader push to induct younger candidates.

Youth wing supporter: “Kailasam represents a generational shift. His work with students and local initiatives has created a positive recall.”

His candidature is also seen as fitting into the social matrix of the constituency, potentially neutralising the advantage of the opposition.

Opposition factor: A persistent challenger

On the other side, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is expected to field Vairamuthu, a candidate who has come close to victory in the last two elections and has maintained a steady grassroots presence.

Political observer: “Vairamuthu’s consistency and narrow past margins make him a serious contender. Any miscalculation in candidate selection could tilt the balance.”

High Command’s tightrope walk

For the DMK leadership, the decision is not merely about replacing or retaining a candidate—it is about reading the constituency’s evolving pulse while safeguarding electoral arithmetic.

Senior party insider: “The leadership will weigh loyalty, performance, caste dynamics and winnability. The final choice will reflect a balance of all these factors.”

The reported push to field more youth candidates, backed by leaders like Udhayanidhi Stalin, adds another layer to the decision-making matrix.

A defining choice ahead

With both continuity and change carrying their own risks and rewards, Thirumayam is shaping up as a microcosm of a larger political question: should parties prioritise legacy or recalibrate to evolving ground realities?

For now, the cadre sentiment appears to favour a shift—but the final word will come from the top.
