AHMEDABAD, SEPT 6

What happens when a village becomes the stage, everyday life becomes the punchline and laughter is given a social conscience? Gujarati cinema could soon have an answer in Rafuchakkar—a new comedy from Ketudada Entertainment that has made its auspicious beginning in Ahmedabad with a promise to serve audiences something more than a conventional laugh riot.

The grand muhurat ceremony of Rafuchakkar was held at Hotel Silver Cloud on Sunday, bringing together an impressive ensemble of Gujarati actors and the film’s creative and production team. The first shooting schedule is slated to begin on September 16 in and around a village near Gandhinagar, with the entire film planned to be completed over about 40 days.

At the centre of the project is writer-director Rakesh Shah, whose ambition is as straightforward as it is challenging—to make audiences laugh while holding up a mirror to rural life and contemporary society.

A ‘Rafuchakkar’ with a difference

The title may trigger an instant association with the Hindi entertainment world, but Shah is emphatic that his Gujarati film travels on an entirely different road.

“The story is entirely different from the Hindi film of Paresh Rawal having the same title. It is based on the life of village people, adequately laced with laughter and a social message.”

The clarification is significant. The 2023 Hindi Rafuchakkar was a JioCinema series starring Maniesh Paul and revolving around a man accused of a string of unusual scams. (IMDb)

Shah’s Rafuchakkar, by contrast, is being positioned as an original Gujarati theatrical comedy rooted in village life, with its humour emerging from characters, situations and the social fabric of rural Gujarat.

From January idea to the big screen

The film’s genesis dates back to January this year, when Shah completed the story. But transforming those written pages into a visual cinematic world required considerably more time.

“Although the story was written by me in January this year, visualisation as a director took nearly three months.”

That three-month visualisation process now gives way to a concentrated 40-day shooting schedule in the Gandhinagar region.

The choice of a village setting is itself part of the film’s creative identity. Rather than constructing an artificial rural backdrop, the makers intend to capture the atmosphere and rhythms of village life in and around an actual rural location.

₹2 crore laughter ride

The film is being mounted on a relatively controlled budget, with the total production cost estimated at ₹1.5 crore to ₹2 crore.

That makes the project an interesting proposition in Gujarati cinema, where strong storytelling, relatable humour and cost-conscious production have often proved a potent combination.

For producer Ketan Thakkar, the challenge will be to turn that controlled investment into a theatrical entertainer capable of connecting with audiences across age groups.

Ravi Solanki serves as associate producer.

An ensemble built for comedy

The film brings together a broad ensemble of Gujarati talent, with Rishi Jani, Pooja Doshi, Hemang Shah, Archan Trivedi, Manin Trivedi, Nimita Vaghasiya, Gaurang JD, Hetal Barot, Naresh Prajapati, Kinnar Barot and Shrey Maradiya in pivotal roles.

The combination of established performers and familiar Gujarati screen faces is expected to give the film the character-driven energy essential to a comedy rooted in community life.

The muhurat ceremony, including a cake-cutting celebration, saw the cast and crew come together to mark the formal launch of the project.

Clean comedy with a conscience

At a time when comedy can easily become dependent on formulaic punchlines, Rafuchakkar is attempting a different balance—clean humour, village characters and a social message.

That combination could prove crucial in determining whether the film travels beyond the conventional comedy audience and becomes a family entertainer.

The makers are clearly betting on relatability rather than spectacle: ordinary people, extraordinary situations and humour drawn from the quirks and contradictions of everyday life.

‘A trendsetter Gujarati movie’

For Shah, however, the ambition extends beyond simply delivering a successful comedy.

“It will be a trendsetter Gujarati movie.”

That is a bold promise—but one the filmmaker now has to translate from script to screen.

With filming scheduled to commence on September 16, the countdown has begun. If the makers succeed in marrying the earthy flavour of rural Gujarat with sharp writing, memorable characters, clean humour and a meaningful social message, Rafuchakkar could arrive in cinemas as a film that seeks not merely to make audiences laugh—but to make them recognise themselves in the laughter.

The film is targeted for a theatrical release in the first quarter of 2027.

For Gujarati cinema, the real question now is not simply “Rafuchakkar kyare?”—but whether this new Rafuchakkar can make audiences say, “Aa film to jovani j!”
