We listen to a lot of romantic songs over time, but no song matches the surreal feeling that the classic ‘Tum Hi Ho’ from Aashiqui 2 gives. This song is a great example of what happens when words, feelings, and melody come together. Not only did it become the song of the year, but it also proved to be a turning point for Mithoon. In a candid chat with host Vishal Dadlani, he spoke about how he had only three words, ‘Tum Hi Ho’ and he made a song of it.
Apparently, director Mohit Suri enacted the scene that leads up to the song Tum Hi Ho and Mithoon recounted that day saying, “I saw Mohit enact that scene and I felt very involved. But I did not have anything to do and then I walked him out to the asked him ke yeh sab sun toh liya, lekin ab aage kya?’ So he said, ‘Pata nahi, dekhte hai, we’ll meet in a couple of days. Then he went into the lift and I told him, Mohit give me some phrase and so while the lift was just about to go down, he said ‘Tum Hi Ho?’ and those three words are what I took back and went to my piano and the minute I played it, maine piano pe haath rakha and it just came naturally – ‘Kyu Ki Tum Hi Ho’. I think words, feeling, and melody – they all just came together.”
