Witnessing a steady rise in daily infections over the past few weeks, Tamil Nadu crossed the 2000 mark on Saturday, registering 2,089 new COVID-19 cases.
With this, the caseload has gone up to 8,77,279 and the death toll to 12,659 following nine more fatalities, the health department said.

The state saw the number of cases cross the 1,000 mark on March 19 after over 80 days, when it touched 1,087, a bulletin said.
The last time the state witnessed its COVID-19 graph breaching the 2,000 mark was on June 17, 2020.
According to the bulletin, recoveries mounted to 8,52,463 today with 1,241 patients being discharged, leaving 12,157 active cases.
Chennai accounted for most of the new infections with 775 cases, taking the aggregate to 2,45,483. The metropolis also leads in the number of fatalities with 4,226.
A total of 85,173 samples were tested on Saturday, pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 1,92,62,447.

128 new COVID-19 cases in Pondy, caseload rises to 40,964
Puducherry clocked 128 fresh cases of coronavirus on Saturday, pushing up total infection count to 40,964. The toll in the union territory climbed to 680 as one more fatality was reported during the last twenty four hours. The deceased, a male aged 72 years, had co morbidities and died of COVID pneumonia and acute respiratory disorder syndrome.
Director of Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, S Mohan Kumar said there were 846 active cases including 579 in home quarantine and as many as 39,438 patients recovered and were discharged so far. The 128 new cases were identified at the end of examination of 2022 people and spread over Puducherry (94), Karaikal (32) and Mahe and Yanam regions (one case each).
The Director said 36 patients were discharged after recovery during last twenty-four hours. The fatality and recovery rates were 1.66 percent and 96.27 percent respectively.
As many as 6.63 lakh samples have been examined so far and 6.15 lakh out of them were found to be negative.
The Director said 24,389 health workers and 10,158 front line workers have been inoculated against the virus. The department has also vaccinated 25,928 people (senior citizens and those above 45 years with co-morbidities).
