“Banting, Bose and Beyond: Inspiring Stories of How Insulin has Changed Lives in India – unearthing the fascinating story of Insulin, its journey into India and countless lives saved,” said Dr Anjana, Managing Director of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre.
Author and Chairman and Chief Diabetologist of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre , Dr V Mohan, said, “I am thrilled to be launching a book that traces the journey of Insulin and how this wonder drug saved millions of lives since its discovery 100 years ago at Toronto Canada by Dr Fredrick Banting. The stories I have captured in this book date back to when I was starting out in the medical field, working with my father, to the recent times. During my research for this book, I also discovered the contributions of Dr JP Bose, the forgotten hero of Indian Diabetology who was the first doctor in India to document the benefits of insulin. Having spent half a century working in the field of diabetes, I was privy to not only how insulin had saved, but also how it had transformed, the lives of those with insulin dependent type 1 diabetes and also those with type 2 diabetes. These true stories chronicle love, compassion, empathy and joy and also discrimination, stigmatization, neglect, hate and suffering. The objective of the book is to instill hope and courage in children and adults with type 1 diabetes. I hope, when they read the book, they will realize that they are not alone, but are part of a large community.”
“I am confident that this book would be of interest not only to people with diabetes and to those who treat diabetes but also to the public at large, to medical students and to anyone else interested in the welfare of people with diabetes in general. I am equally thrilled to be releasing my autobiography in Tamil called ‘Ethilum Sirappu’,” Dr V Mohan added.
Synopsis of the book ‘Banting, Bose and Beyond’
Type 1 diabetes is a severe insulin-dependent form of diabetes, which most commonly affects children, but may occur at any age. Until 1921, when the epoch-making discovery of insulin was made by Dr Fredrick Banting and colleagues at the University of Toronto, Canada, children with type 1 diabetes could only live for a few months or maximum for a year or two. The discovery of insulin in 1921, changed the lives of those with type 1 diabetes, forever. However, very little is known about what happened in India around the time of the discovery of insulin. The book would be of great interest not only to those with diabetes and their families but also to students, medical professionals and indeed everyone. The true stories of the heroes with type 1 diabetes described in this book, will be an inspiration to anyone with any chronic disease. Written in Dr V. Mohan’s usual sagacious and yet gripping style, it is a thriller that is difficult to put down. Dr Mohan is a great storyteller and this book is yet another jewel in his literary crown.
