In a decisive move positioning Tamil Nadu at the forefront of India’s community healthcare transformation, Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited inaugurated its first Arogya Seva Kendra in Egmore, Chennai, launching a nationwide network of 32 free primary healthcare clinics designed to reach over a million lives — with Tamil Nadu leading the rollout across key districts including Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur and Karur.

  • Chennai Becomes Nerve Centre of Free Preventive Healthcare Movement in India
  • Tamil Nadu Rollout Covers Egmore, Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur and Karur
  • Zero-Cost Clinics to Offer Doctor Consultations, Diagnostics, Medicines and Vaccination Support
  • Initiative Targets High-Burden Districts with Hypertension Rates up to 40% and Diabetes up to 29%
  • Over One Million Lives to Benefit from Structured Community Healthcare Intervention

The initiative, implemented in partnership with Piramal Swasthya, part of the Piramal Foundation, marks a major expansion of structured, preventive and accessible healthcare delivery at the grassroots level, particularly in districts facing a growing burden of hypertension and diabetes.

The Chennai launch signals the beginning of a long-term Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at delivering equitable, preventive and continuous primary healthcare directly within communities.

The Arogya Seva Kendras (ASK) will provide comprehensive primary healthcare services free of cost, including MBBS doctor consultations, screening and diagnostics for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and anaemia, medicines for acute and chronic conditions, counselling, and adult pneumococcal vaccination support.

The clinics will operate with dedicated medical teams, defined treatment protocols and structured follow-up systems to ensure continuity of care — addressing a critical gap in early detection and preventive healthcare.

India continues to face a significant non-communicable disease burden, with hypertension prevalence ranging between 20% and 40% among adults in several districts, and diabetes prevalence reaching nearly 29% in certain regions — often remaining undiagnosed until serious complications arise.

Announcing the initiative at the launch of the first Arokya Seva Kendra at Egmore in Chennai, Anand Roy, MD & CEO, Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited, emphasised the urgent need to strengthen healthcare at the community level.

“India’s healthcare conversation must begin within the community. We cannot hospitalise our way out of the non-communicable disease (NCD) crisis; and we believe primary care is where healthcare equity begins.

When screening, medicines and follow-up are consistently accessible, complications are prevented before they become catastrophic. Institutions across the healthcare ecosystem have a shared responsibility to strengthen this foundation. Through this CSR initiative, we are contributing to that collective effort, and ensuring primary healthcare reaches people early, reliably and close to where they live.”

Mr Anand Roy further said, “The initiative is entirely funded by Star Health under its CSR allocation, while Piramal Swasthya will oversee implementation, staffing and clinical governance, leveraging its deep experience in delivering healthcare across underserved geographies.”

Answering media queries Mr Roy said that the Star Health is investing Rs 15 Crores for this CSR initiative. If necessitates, in future Star Health will collaborate with the government in its healthcare programmes.

In a statement Ajay Piramal, Chairman, Piramal Group, said: “Over the past 17 years, Piramal Foundation has worked across India’s most challenging geographies, guided by deep community engagement and systems transformation. This CSR partnership with Star Health Insurance builds on that legacy – bringing trusted, comprehensive primary care closer to communities, impacting over a million lives through accessible consultations, diagnostics, and free medicines.”

Strengthening the preventive healthcare dimension, Pfizer India is supporting the initiative with vaccination expertise, particularly addressing the significant burden of pneumococcal infections and adult respiratory diseases.

In his comment, Saral Gupta, Director Market Access, Pfizer India, said: “Adult immunization remains an overlooked yet vital component of India’s preventive healthcare framework. Our country bears 23% of the global burden of community-acquired pneumonia and strengthening access to vaccination, especially for high risk adult groups, is critical to lowering the overall impact of such vaccine preventable diseases.

We congratulate Star Health on making adult vaccination an integral part of their Arogya Seva Kendra initiative, and are pleased to continue supporting it with our expertise.”

The Arogya Seva Kendras will deliver the following services free of cost:

  • MBBS doctor consultations
  • Screening for hypertension, diabetes and oral health conditions
  • Laboratory diagnostics including blood sugar, haemoglobin and rapid tests
  • Medicines for common ailments and chronic conditions
  • Health counselling and awareness sessions
  • Pneumococcal vaccination support for eligible beneficiaries

Beyond Tamil Nadu, the Phase 1 rollout spans major healthcare-deficit districts across Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra — but Chennai’s inauguration marks the symbolic and operational beginning of what could become one of India’s most impactful CSR-led primary healthcare movements.

With Tamil Nadu leading the charge, the initiative reinforces the state’s reputation as a pioneer in accessible, preventive and community-centred healthcare delivery.
