TN, Pondy Principal Chief Commissioner of IT unveils Heritage Building ‘Painthamizh Muttram’

Ravichandran Ramasamy, IRS, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry inaugurated the Heritage Building “Painthamizh Muttram” and Unveiled the Plaques containing the engravings of Tamil poem “Purananuru” at Income Tax Office, Sekkalai, Karaikudi on Friday in the distinguished presence of Seema Raj, IRS, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Madurai.

Ravichandran Ramasamy, IRS, Pr. Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry said, ”It is a building of more than 100 years old which has been renovated in a traditional method. He stated that probably this is the oldest Income Tax Office building this is going to house the nation’s first Income Tax Museum.”

• He also appeals to all the public and taxpayers to provide ancient palm leaf scripts and manuscripts relating to tax accounts and assessments of the vintage period of display in the Museum.

He traced the history of rich Tamil heritage and the contribution of the people of Chettinadu region towards the development of economy and the nation and acknowledged the role of taxpayers and tax professionals of the yester years.

He recalled the classic verse ”யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்” (To us all towns are one, all men our kin”) by Kaniyan Poongundran from “Puranaanuru” of Sangam Literature, a classical Tamil Poetic work and traditionally the last of the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthogai). It is a collection of 400 heroic poems about kings, wars and public life.

In the museum, rare palm leaf inscribed books of accounts of the business such as, journal and ledger and seals of verification by income tax authorities on palm leaf books accounts will be displayed.

Senior Officers and officials of the Income Tax office, Tax Practitioners Members of the Trade Associations attended the programme.
